Overview

A cocky teenager learns some important lessons about playing by her own rules in this comedy drama. Haley Graham Missy Peregrym is a gifted 17-year-old gymnast with a strong rebellious streak -- strong enough that she walked away from her teammates on the eve of a major international tournament because she'd had enough of the rigid regimentation of Team U.S.A. After experiencing a scrape with the law with her extreme-cycling friends, Haley is given an unusual sentence -- attending the Vickerman Gymnastics Academy, a world-class training facility run by Burt Vickerman Jeff Bridges, who has led some of the world's greatest gymnasts to championship status. Haley makes no secret of her dislike of life at Vickerman's, and her fellow athletes aren't about to forgive her just yet for letting down her teammates. But while Vickerman makes clear things are to be done his way, he respects Haley's talent, and together she shows him and her new teammates how to follow the rules while still expressing your individuality. Also starring Tarah Paige and Vanessa Lengies, Stick It was the first directorial credit for Jessica Bendinger, who wrote the critically praised teen comedy Bring It On.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
If the women’s gymnastics film Stick It calls to mind the cheerleader flick Bring It On, the comparison isn’t accidental: The films share a writer, Jessica Bendinger, who steps up to director with this entertaining feature. After a run-in with the law, disgraced former gymnast Haley Graham (Missy Peregrym) is ordered to serve out her probationary period in the world she fled years before. Enrolled in an elite gymnastics program run by legendary trainer Burt Vickerman (Jeff Bridges), she initially retains her rebellious attitude but eventually wins the respect of her fellow athletes. With the exception of the ever-reliable Bridges -- perfectly cast as the no-nonsense coach -- the performers aren’t as diverting as the spunky cast of Bring It On. Stick It does, however, feature some awe-inspiring displays of gymnastics, and the DVD extras, rather than focusing primarily on behind-the-scenes glimpses, are geared to fans of this exacting, physically demanding sport. Others will simply enjoy the uplift of this solid directorial debut.

    more from this reviewer

    If you love gynastics...

This movie was a really fun look behind the scenes in the world of competative gymnastics.

Through Hailey, the audience gets to see the hard work and pain the gymnasts go through to be successful. The tricks the athletes perform are amazing!

Also, Hailey's own story keeps you interested and emotionally involved.

Above all, this movie is fun, funny and has a great soundtrack.

    Stick it...

I'm generally not the "girly girl" type but this movie was awesome. I loved the fact that "whether it's the actors or not" people actually can do that type of stuff. I honestly wish I would have joined gymnastics. Plus it's cool that it shows that it doesn't matter what you dress like, everyone has different intrests.

"The 'Bring It On' of Gymnastics"

"Stick It" is a great title for this movie. The storyline is kind of fictional. I mean, have you ever heard of a juvenile getting a choice between gymnastics or jail? Just like in almost every movie meant for teens today, there is your misunderstood main character, a sarcastic rival, and the cute boy who always gets the girl. In this case though, the boy is not that cute. If you have seen a "Bring It On" cheerleading movie, it is basicly the same thing, except with gymnastics (Referred to in the movie as "Gym-nice-tics."). This gym is out in the middle of nowhere and has a horrible reputation. The owner/trainer at first is just in it for the money. But in the end, he turns out to be an old softy. The girls enrolled in this gym are hard-core gymnasts, in it for the long haul. The whole movie is a competition between the main character and her rival. But, it turns out that they all care for each other more than they make it out to look like. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in the "girly" type sports. In my opinion, it does not quite do the sport justice, but it definitly gives a good insight into female competition sports.

At least it was kind of truthful.

I am a formar gymnast and the stuff in the movie about working hard and long days is all true in real life. I don't like the fact that at the end the gymnasts scratched the events. It's really unlikely. Also if a judges can't hold grudes. All in all, it was ok.

    Rock on Kellan and John!!!

This movie wastes so much time, I don't know why it was even made. In the final major competition all the girls take turns forfeiting- they refuse to perform so there is nothing to watch. There is only one cool scene of gymnastics that has some Busby Berkley flavor. Other than that there is nothing- I thought this was a gymnastics movie. The characters are all very lame and boring. The lead girl is supposed to be rebellious even though she really isn't- she just makes those hand symbols like on the cover 800 million times which after a while is just really stupid and aggravating. The mean girl isn't that mean, and the Asian-American girl will make a gesture and then look at everyone else to make sure she is doing it right. These girls are like kittens trying to be lionesses. They have no personality or strength. The ONLY good parts of this movie were the characters of Frank (Kellan Lutz) and Poot (John Patrick Amedori). These two guys are incredibly fun, funny, cute, and likable. They are barely in the movie, but they easily steal the entire show. The writer should have skipped all the boring female characters and written a movie where Frank and Poot are the leads. Frank and Poot are the only bright spots in this dull film. Kellan Lutz is also absolutely gorgeous by the way!
