This all but forgotten feature-length concert film taken from Alice Cooper's 1977 tour was released on VHS (and, presumably, Beta) by Magnetic Video in 1979, back when the retail price on prerecorded videos was between $60 and $90 each -- and in 1979 dollars, when subways and pizza were 75 cents per ride/slice and a one-bedroom apartment could be had in a nice, middle-class part of Manhattan for $400 a month! This was long before MTV was even some money burning a hole in the pockets of music, broadcasting, and cable executives, and the visual material looks refreshingly crude and honest, matching the sound. Today it's a bit of a period piece, of course, and it was probably done one tour too late to really capture Alice Cooper at their very best, but what's here will still prove fun and exciting for fans of the band's work, or for hopeless '70s nostalgia enthusiasts. Songs include "From the Inside," "Devil's Food," "Billion Dollar Babies," "18," "Nurse Rozette," and "School's Out." The Strange Case of Alice Cooper never made it to laserdisc, but it might make one hell of an entertaining DVD, assuming one were willing and able to track down the rights and the original sound and picture elements -- and it's a lot of fun even on VHS. ~ Bruce Eder
