Though the commentary tracks may not be as lively as one might hope (Sedaris claims that they were, in fact, recorded at 9:00 a.m.), they nevertheless offer interesting background on characters and situations that the trio had been refining in their live act for years.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
The agonizingly didactic Afterschool Specials that ABC aired in the '70s are treated with the derision they deserve in Comedy Central's short-lived, debate-inspiring series Strangers with Candy. Amy Sedaris (sister of writer/playwright David Sedaris) plays Jerri Blank, a 46-year-old former "user, boozer and loser" who returns to high school to recapture the adolescence that she never had. What ensues is a long line of thinly disguised morality plays, from which Jerri learns all the wrong lessons. There is, for example, the episode wherein Jerri is rejected by her classmates, mixes a batch of crank for the homecoming queen (precipitating an overdose), then throws a raucous "goodbye" party dedicated to the queen, winning friends in the process. Such bizarre plot turns fill the ten episodes (plus the unaired pilot "Retardation: A Celebration") collected here from the show's first season, many of which make Comedy Central's South Park look rather tame. Indeed, Strangers with Candy is about as kid-friendly as Apocalypse Now, if far less pretentious. Those looking for an endearing protagonist are unlikely to find her in Jerri Blank. For anyone who has ever used the phrase "high school yearbook" and "ritualistic voodoo hexes" in the same sentence, Strangers with Candy will feel like sweet revenge.

    WooHoo! Fun times!

I can't believe I missed this when it first came out on DVD. This is an awesomely funny show and I laughed out loud at every episode!! Really, Comedy Central needs to get shows like this back on the air!! Well, at least we can watch it now on DVD w/ no commercials! This makes 'South Park' and even 'Reno 911' seem oddly non-humorous!

Thank Comedy Central? Not a chance

Comedy Central barely committed to this show and bailed at practically the first chance. Lorne Michaels commitment to fresh comedy is weak. They should just change their name to the Saturday Night Live channel. Battlebots is a comedy? Instead, thank Amy Sedaris, Paul Dinello and Steven Colbert for their astonishing culturally-sharp satire which made me laugh out loud at every episode. Halfway through the first season I knew it was so good, it couldn't possibly find an audience. I treasure the two seasons we did get. You get it or you don't.

    There's nothing like this show..

The actors, the writers, everything is genius. Amy Sedaris, Stephen Colbert and the rest of the cast have this chemistry that feels like it produces a new genre of comedy. I would stay up till 3am just to watch the reruns on comedy central, jeopardizing the following day. So when they stopped the reruns I was naturally enraged. As a film maker/animator this show would have been my dream job to have worked on, but realizing that it's impossible now, I'll settle for the DVD.

    Finally!

FINALLY Comedy Central has decided to release their funniest show on DVD!! What took you guys so long? Amy Sedaris is hilarious in this politically incorrect, brilliant comedy. Think about those corny ABC Afternoon Specials from the 70s....SWC parodies those, including the ''background'' music and all! Bring on Seasons 2 and 3!

    Buy this Immediately

Strangers With Candy was and always will be the best show Comedy Central has ever pulled out of its sack of madness...What a shame that this show was cancelled while recycled T&A garbage like the Man Show was continued. This will be the best DVD you will ever buy, so buy it...and maybe those straight-lacers up at Comedy Central will get with the program and release the rest of the seasons....and who knows, put it back on the air?!!>!>? That would be better than any batch of Devils Harelip, thats for sure....

A genius idea sparked from the demented minds at Comedy Central

From the same network that has bought shows like ''South Park'', ''The Man Show'', and ''Insomniac'', Comedy Central really knows how to generate a creative twist and run with it. Strangers With Candy pioneered a pulp-comic-Kids-in-the-Hall-styled comedy that basically spoofs the high school experience as seen by a forty-something ex-junkie and prostitute. Such a bizarre idea can only come from the minds of cable television at Comedy Central.

    Brilliance

Everyone should be able to witness one of these episodes. Check out Episode 4 for Jerri's reading of 'Packing a Musket'. Brilliant.

I laughed so hard, I peed a little bit.

... but only a little. I've been a huge SWC fan for years, and the release of this product makes me get all tingly near my danger zone. I'm making jalepeno margaritas, so come on over and help me r-enact the mexican donkey trick.
