Overview

Fans of Comedy Central's irreverent satire of afterschool specials rejoice, the first season of Strangers With Candy has finally arrived on DVD thanks to the folks at WEA. Presented in 1.33:1 full-frame and offering English audio rendered in Dolby Digital Surround, the image is flawless and the sound presentation is free of any hiss or distortion. The inclusion of the never-before-seen pilot episode entitled "Retardation: A Celebration" is sure to delight fans, and commentary by stars Amy Sedaris, Paul Dinello, and Stephen Colbert on four episodes offers hilarious insight into the creative force that drove the series. Though the commentary tracks may not be as lively as one might hope (Sedaris claims that they were, in fact, recorded at 9:00 a.m.), they nevertheless offer interesting background on characters and situations that the trio had been refining in their live act for years.

The agonizingly didactic Afterschool Specials that ABC aired in the '70s are treated with the derision they deserve in Comedy Central's short-lived, debate-inspiring series Strangers with Candy. Amy Sedaris (sister of writer/playwright David Sedaris) plays Jerri Blank, a 46-year-old former "user, boozer and loser" who returns to high school to recapture the adolescence that she never had. What ensues is a long line of thinly disguised morality plays, from which Jerri learns all the wrong lessons. There is, for example, the episode wherein Jerri is rejected by her classmates, mixes a batch of crank for the homecoming queen (precipitating an overdose), then throws a raucous "goodbye" party dedicated to the queen, winning friends in the process. Such bizarre plot turns fill the ten episodes (plus the unaired pilot "Retardation: A Celebration") collected here from the show's first season, many of which make Comedy Central's South Park look rather tame. Indeed, Strangers with Candy is about as kid-friendly as Apocalypse Now, if far less pretentious. Those looking for an endearing protagonist are unlikely to find her in Jerri Blank. For anyone who has ever used the phrase "high school yearbook" and "ritualistic voodoo hexes" in the same sentence, Strangers with Candy will feel like sweet revenge.
