Die Hard At A Hockey Game

Jean-Claude Van Damme plays the part of ex-firefighter Darren McCord, who surprises his son for his birthday by taking him and his sister to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks. McCord is also an employee on duty at the Civic Arena that night, and so after giving his kids a tour of the facilities, meeting other workers and penguin players along the way, he shows them their seats telling them to stay put, and not to leave them while he goes to work on the premises. The Game 7 between the two teams has also drawn the Vice President of the United States (played by Raymond J. Barry - Born On The 4th Of July, Rapid Fire, Dead Man Walking & The Chamber) who is surrounded by his barrage of secret service agents and strict security measures. However, this would be a Game 7 that they wouldn't forget, because plotting to hold the Vice President hostage for monetary gain is a crooked and deranged CIA agent, Joshua Foss (Powers Boothe - The Emerald Forest, Rapid Fire, Tombstone & Frailty). As a result of an argument between the two kids, McCord's daughter leaves her seat crying and upset and heads to the women's restroom only to walk in on a murder. She is taken hostage, and taken up to be with the Vice President and his guests who are also by now being held hostage. Foss' intentions are clear. Giving the Vice President bank account numbers, he instructs him to have 1/3 of the moneys transfered to other accounts set up in each period of the game. If by the end of that period, the money has not been transfered, someone dies. If by the end of the 2nd period, the money has not been transfered, two more people die. If by the end of the final period, the money has not been transfered...he blows the entire arena killing as many as he can with bombs he has had placed strategically throughout the structure. When McCord goes to check on his children, he discovers that his daughter is gone, and goes to look for her. The race is on as one incident leads to another, and he begins to discover the evil plot and the demise of the people there at the game if he doesn't act soon. At one point in the movie, to avoid being seen by two of the terrorists who have been sent to find him, he suits up in Joe Tolliver's (Penguin's Goalie) uniform because he had to leave the game feeling sick, and heads out to the ice. The coach sends him back out thinking he is feeling better. McCord is suddenly put into a situation where he has to make a save, and (of course) it was the 'save of the year'. Then coming back to his senses, he realizes his time is running short, and he punches a nearby Blackhawk and is ejected for game misconduct....and the adventure continues. The movie could have done well without this little attempt at glory, and was only an amusing distraction. I wonder if John McClane were in this situation, if he would have taken the time to hit the ice for the play of the year? McCord continues his race against time as the game goes into Sudden Death forcing an OT when the Penguins score a last second goal to stay alive...literally. This movie was not believeable by any stretch of the imagination, but it was fun and entertaining. Powers Boothe brought a sinister air to his character, and both of the children did well in their parts as well. Van Damme, ever resilient, did well again as the action hero pitted against impossible odds. It was like watching Die Hard On Ice...though, this movie could not fairly be compared to the Die Hard movies. But it is still a recommend for action fans, and a must for Van Damme fans.
