Overview

Clint Eastwood returns as the San Francisco detective angry at the world in the box-office hit Sudden Impact (which he also directed). Warner has done an excellent job on this 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. While small imperfections abound (including some muted colors and edge enhancement), overall, this is a very solid transfer with well-rendered images and colors. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and sports a fine new remix. The surround sounds, while not expansive, certainly do show some range and fidelity. All aspects of the dialogue, effects, and music are clear and free of any excessive distortion or hiss. Also included on this disc is a Dolby 1.0 Mono soundtrack in French as well as Spanish, French, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, and Korean subtitles. Sadly, Sudden Impact is one of the generally bare-bones Dirty Harry DVDs, sporting only some cast and crew information, a few memorable lines from the film, production notes, and a theatrical trailer presented in anamorphic widescreen.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Perry Seibert
The fourth Dirty Harry film will probably be best remembered for providing pop culture with one of the most popular quotes in movie history, "Go ahead. Make my day." Dirty Harry was originally a character truly conflicted about his desire for justice and his desire to follow the law. By this point, in a more culturally conservative climate, Harry had (d)evolved into a one-man wrecking crew that the audience was to support wholly and completely. Where the first Dirty Harry was very much a part of its time (early '70s questioning of the breakdown of societal barriers), Sudden Impact is a product of the Ronald Reagan '80s. The more interesting film comes from the more interesting time. Although Eastwood played Dirty Harry one more time, it was obvious from this effort that the character and the series had hit a creative dead-end.
