Overview

Supergirl is a really bad movie, so it's only fitting that the special features on its 2000 DVD release from Anchor Bay are just as hard to sit through. The first failing is a common one: to get to the special chapter, audio, and sound features, viewers have to quickly press the menu key, or the opening credits will just start rolling. Within the special features, everything is in soft, 1980s comic book-style fonts and colors. The pictures are all cartoon drawings, which can be an eyesore. Trailers are offered in four different languages (good) and three TV spots are included, but the storyboards are lousy and the still set shots will seem boring and repetitious to anyone other than diehard Faye Dunaway fans or adolescent boys who can't get enough of Helen Slater in a short skirt. The talent bios are interesting, though they beg the question of why Dunaway, Peter O'Toole, and Mia Farrow felt the need to add this film to their resumes. The "Supergirl: The Making of the Movie" featurette is well-edited and is actually more entertaining than the movie. Viewers also get Dolby Digital 5.1 or Dolby Surround options and painless, though boring, chapter selection options. This DVD has been discontinued, so it could be considered a collector's item, but where other DVDs offer a lot of neat stuff, Supergirl on DVD just offers a lot of stuff.
