Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Volume 3 of Superman: The Animated Series contains the last 18 episodes, and they saved the best for last on this two-disc set. Disc 1 includes the pivotal two-part episodes "Apokolips...Now!," in which the ongoing battle between the Man of Steel and dictator Darkseid becomes extremely personal, and "Little Girl Lost," which introduces Supergirl. The last episode on the disc is "Where There's Smoke," featuring Frasier's Peri Gilpin as the smoking-hot voice of the incendiary Volcana. But Superman is just getting warmed up. In the highly entertaining "Knight Time," Superman goes undercover as the Caped Crusader when Batman's mysterious absence sparks a crime wave in Gotham City ("All this sneaking around isn't exactly my style," he complains to Robin). In "New Kids in Town," the Legion of Superheroes (Cosmic Boy, Chameleon Boy, and Saturn Girl) travel back in time to Smallville to stop Brainiac from killing Clark Kent, the teenager who would be Superman ("Like a pair of glasses is going to fool anyone," Clark scoffs when the trio give him his iconic disguise). But things get much darker and deeper in the series finale, "Legacy," a powerful two-parter in which Superman is programmed by Darkseid to attack the Earth and shatters the faith and trust of the metropolis. The series is sealed by a memorable first kiss between Superman and Lois Lane. Super bonus features on the set include info-packed commentaries for "New Kids in Town," "Apokolips...Now!," and "Legacy"; excerpts from the thorough documentary Look, Up in the Sky! The Amazing Story of Superman; and an informal gathering of Superman's creative team, who discuss the development of the series, favorite episodes, and hated episodes (sorry, "Superman's Pal").

The Best Volume of the Series

Going out with a bang, the Superman series features some of its very best episodes on this last volume. The Batman team-ups Demon Reborn and Knight Time are absolute must sees to understand the dynamic of these two opposite (but mutually respecting) heroes. Also, the series finale with its dark adult tones will leave you shocked at the bravery of the producers. Here my usual complaint about Superman (lack of depth) is put to rest. This is the character we have all wanted to see and thrill to. Bruce Timm and Company leaves us wanting more (look to Justice League for that). Two thumbs up for this volume!
