Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman, Richard Pryor, Marlon Brando DVD New in new packaging. 4 discs. Language: English. Run time: 496 minutes. Originally released: ... 2001. With great aplomb--and the tag line "You'll Believe a Man Can Fly"--DC Comics' Superman met with movie magic in 1978. The film featured Oscar-winning flying effects, John Williams's soaring music, and an innovative title sequence, and audiences ate it up, along with its thrilling sequel. Director Richard Donner's casting of the then-unknown Christopher Reeve couldn't have been better--the towering Reeve fit the suit and cape masterfully, but his real weapon was making the bumbling Clark Kent into an endearing leading man instead of the dry counterpoint to the Man of Steel that Kent had been in earlier film versions. Although most critics lean toward Richard Lester's Superman II (1980) as the series high point, which offered an endearing love story between the Man of Steel and Lois Lane (Margot Kidder), Donner's first film also Read more Show Less

Superman II continues the superhero's struggles with his arch villain Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) and introduces three cosmic criminals from his home planet. Meanwhile, Superman's deepening relationship with Lois results in a difficult choice. Superman III takes a comical turn, with legendary comedian Richard Pryor starring as a computer-expert villain who causes the caped crusader to split into two Supermans -- one evil and one good. Nuclear disarmament is the subject of Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Seeking revenge after his release from prison, Lex Luthor creates Nuclear Man 2 whose powers threaten Superman in a battle to the death.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Chas Turner
Preserving truth, justice, and the American way is no picnic, but the Man of Steel flies through his work all the same. This collection is stronger than a locomotive, complete with all four high-flying Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve. Featuring restored scenes and a crisp, new transfer, the 1978 original Superman introduces Krypton's favorite son to Earth, establishes his secret identity as Clark Kent, hooks him up with loyal Lois Lane Margot Kidder, and pits him against fan-favorite villain Lex Luthor Gene Hackman. Superman II continues the saga, as Superman again finds himself battling Luthor, plus some alien supercriminals to boot. The comedic crowd-pleaser Superman III pairs our hero with Richard Pryor -- for better or for worse. Rounding up the adventure is Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, in which Luthor returns with a vengeance and Jon Cryer at his side!, forcing Superman to address nuclear disarmament.

    Great New Scenes

When I first heard they were putting nine extra minutes onto the original superman movie I was mad. I also thought Christopher Reeves wouldnt stand for it either. The scenes however were great and tastefully added. So now I can understand why Mr. Reeves sat down for it.
