It's there that he falls in love with Lois Lane Margot Kidder, who is already in love with Superman. But the love story is quickly sidetracked once the villainous Lex Luthor Gene Hackman launches a diabolical plan to conquer the world and kill Superman. Superman: The Movie is filled with action, special effects and a surprising amount of humor.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
A rousing big-budget spectacle of the highest order, 1978's Superman succeeds thanks to its snappy pace, a witty script and a slew of memorable performances. Director Richard Donner wanted an unknown for the tricky title role; Christopher Reeve fits the bill with a finely nuanced performance, poking fun at the Superman mystique without diminishing its power. The reliable Gene Hackman steals just about every scene he's in as smarmy archenemy Lex Luthor. In a smaller but no less memorable role, Marlon Brando was reportedly paid close to $4 million dollars for his ten-minute cameo as The Man of Steel's father. Superman proved to be another hit for Donner, following 1976's The Omen; the film would inspire three sequels of descending quality (though many argue that the second installment is in fact superior to this one).

    Universally Praised

Even after watching the newer 'Superman Returns' movie from 2007, this one is fantastic. The story, characters, and effects are all great. This movie holds up very well all these years later and is highly recommended for any comic fan.

Christopher Reeve is the real Superman!

Christopher Reeve is the real Superman! This movie from 1978 is the very first movie about the man of steel. If you remember this movie then you remember the late 1970s! Marlon Brando is Jor-el, Margot Kidder is Lois Lane, Gene Hackman is Lex Luthor, this is a great movie that is superb and supasses the test of time!

    The Best Comicbook Adaption

Without a doubt Richard Donner's Superman is the best movie made out of a comicbook in film history. It is able to give the origin of Superman without boring those familiar to the story and bring in humor to show that the character is a bit chessy. Christopher Reeve is the epitome of the hero, and does a brilliant job conveying the emotions behind the man of steel. A must for comicbook fans and those who hate them alike

Comic Book Adventure Comes to Life

Great example of bringing the comic book adventure to life, setting the stage for sequels, Batman movies and many other copies. If you like the film, check out the book Curse of the Silver Screen - Tragedy & Disaster Behind the Movies for a behind the scenes look at the making of this troubled series and the tragedies that hit the stars of the film. Available in the book section
