Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Regarded as one of ballet's crown jewels, Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake was a surprising flop upon its debut in 1877. Since the acclaimed Pepita/Ivanov version of 1895, however, the story of Prince Siegfried's love for the Swan Queen has long since become both a holiday favorite and a cultural touchstone. The saga follows young Siegfried as he falls in love with an enchanted princess who has been transformed into a swan by an evil sorcerer. Tragically, the only recourse the lovers have to break the spell is a final act of self-sacrifice. This production, filmed in 1980, stars Natalia Makarova as Odette-Odile and Anthony Dowell as Prince Siegfried, and features the Royal Ballet Covent Garden with music by the Orchestra of Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet.

    It's a Gift!

The dancing and staging are teriffic. Makarova so beautiful and swan-like, Dowell perfect in every way, the perfect Prince Sigfried. This performance is absolutely top notch. The corps de ballet will take your breath away as the swans. A few camera angles, but nothing that blows your mind in the filming.
