Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Perry Seibert
S.W.A.T. adheres closely to the conventions of police-action films. That helps the film during its first half. The filmmakers understand what the characters have to do and so they are relaxed enough to give the cops flashes of real personality. Colin Farrell and Michelle Rodriguez have some genuine chemistry and they easily earn the audience's goodwill; Samuel L. Jackson is his usual engaging self; and Josh Charles registers with very little screen time. Sadly, when the admittedly brilliant high-concept second half of the movie begins, the filmmakers shift focus entirely onto the action sequences at the expense of the characters. That might have been enough if director Clark Johnson had a taste for action sequences, but he seems more comfortable with his characters conversing in a bar than he does when they beat each other up. Only Oscar-winning composer Elliot Goldenthal shows creativity and originality through the entire film with his amusing musical score that finds numerous humorous ways to recycle the theme song from the television show that inspired this just slightly better-than-average action film.
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert
This isn't a John Woo movie, or Bad Boys 2, or any of the other countless movies with wall-to-wall action and cardboard characters.... The movie's ambition is essentially to be the same kind of police movie they used to make before special effects upstaged human beings.
Chicago Reader - J. Jones
As summer shoot-'em-ups go, this is pretty well executed, with plenty of macho posing and gunfire.
New York Magazine - Peter Rainer
There is something sneakily gratifying about all this: Not since the days of Earthquake have Hollywood producers so indulged their fantasies of trashing the town.
Daily News - Jack Matthews
The standout in the cast is James Todd Smith, whose acting talent may soon persuade him to shed his adolescent stage name of LL Cool J and concentrate on mainstream film roles.

As summer shoot-'em-ups go, this is pretty well executed, with plenty of macho posing and gunfire.

I liked the movie, but did not appreciate the Polish remark.

    Movie and review commentary

This is to comment on both the movie and the prior reviews. As far as this movie goes, &quot I&quot liked it, and I'm not all that easy to please. Samuel L. Jackson is, of course, a great actor. Colin Farrell is gaining strength as an actor. The others in the cast are not famous, but they all do good jobs, in my opinion. An action packed movie, which is what Hollywood was going for. It seems to me that a few of the reviewers were turned off by anti-Polish remarks in the movie, which they called anti-White and anti-racial (although they are, technically, anti-ethnic). Gee, I didn't even notice those, must be because I'm so used to stuff like that, all that kind of Hollywood stuff that is anti-woman and anti-feminist (i.e sexist). Seems those reviewers are Polish guys so they get offended with a few Polish remarks, but we women are so used to anti-women stuff done by Hollywood and commercial advertisers so we don't notice that stuff because it's everywhere. We don't call an entire movie crap or worthless due to it, but a few anti-ethnic remarks and these guys call an entire movie worthless. If we women did that, sheesh, every movie, liquor advertisement, book, etc. would be worthless! So don't misjudge this action movie just because of some bad jokes. We women have been ignoring that kind of stuff for our entire lives. You either ignore it or you end up boycotting everything.

Hollywood formula rubbish - waste of time

I sat watching this awful movie thinking it was a very average Hollywood action film, until it got to the part with the anti-Polish remarks. The tacky writers and producers, the director (and the anything-for-money actors mouthing the scripted words) should be ashamed of themselves but of course they are not - so long as the dollars keep rolling in. Poles and Polish Americans should not be subjected to racist abuse and insults.

    colin farrell shines once again

This is a good movie. The action is good and pretty constant. There isn't one boring moment in this movie it keeps you interested the whole way through. Colin Farrell delivers yet another spectacular performance in this great action movie. This movie only helped to cement colin as the being the greatest actor in the world.
