Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Wayne Lewis
This production of Stephen Sondheim's beloved musical theater landmark began in New York, with the New York Philharmonic providing the music, and then went on the road to San Francisco, where its three-night stand at the Davies Symphony Hall is now the stuff of legend -- and thankfully, video. George Hearn, the original "Demon Barber of Fleet Street," now truly owns the role after more than 20 years' seasoning. Much the same could be said for Patti LuPone's comically rich portrayal of Mrs. Lovett. Also bringing considerable charm to the production are David Gaines and Lisa Vroman as the young lovers and erstwhile Doogie Howser M.D. star Neil Patrick Harris as Tobias Ragg. "Not While I'm Around," Ragg's big number, truly soars, thanks to Harris's heretofore unflexed vocal muscles. Timothy Nolan as Judge Turpin, Stanford Olsen Pirelli, and John Aler Beadle add to the general level of excellence. Standing in for their Gotham counterparts, the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under Robert Fisher's direction bring their world-class brilliance to bear on the complex and wonderful score. While one misses the lavish trappings of the original Broadway presentation, this concert performance is not without its theatrical touches, from the dapper Victorian costumes to the rare but impeccably chosen props. The DVD, which includes a fascinating making-of piece on the production, is essential viewing for Sondheim fans.

    Great show

Sondheim's masterpiece gets excellent treatment here. This is a live concert performance, with the singers in costume. They move through, around and above the orchestra on catwalks. The leads Patti Lupone and George Hearn could hardly be bettered. They have just the right voices, looks and personalities for their roles. All the other singers do very well, I won't bother detailing. The DVD has interviews with some of the singers, and the booklet has an essay about the story and the musical. The only way this show could have been improved is if it was fully staged, not just a concert. Sondheim comes on for a bow at the end. I think this is Sondheim's best work, though I find it has two big problems: considering the darkness of the plot it has too much comedy, and I'd like Sweeney and his daughter to sing a duet. As far as I know this is the only live performance of any musical on DVD, so don't miss it.
