Liam Neeson lets loose a mean dose of delicious thuggery in Taken, a taut thriller that puts the viewer in the passenger seat right next to a hell-bent father seeking his stolen daughter and the blood of those behind her abduction. Deftly directed by District B13's Pierre Morel from a script by Luc Besson and writing partner Robert Mark Kamen, this tense actioner doesn't spend much time setting things up, nor does it decelerate once the flick picks up steam. Not one to overstay its welcome, this suspenseful tale is an economic exercise in delivering the goods for those who are interested in a two-fisted Liam Neeson vehicle to soak up, bask in, and then leave behind as soon as it's over. Neeson stars as Bryan Mills, an ex-CIA agent who's left behind the service to help care for his teenaged daughter, Kim Maggie Grace, even if she spends most of her time with his ex-wife, Lenore Famke Janssen, and her wealthy husband, Stuart Xander Berkeley. Mills shows off his competence in combat early on after thwarting an attempt on the life of pop star Sheerah Holly Valance, whom his daughter idolizes. Soon after, the 17-year-old is off to Paris, but only once she agrees to a strict set of rules, namely that the family knows where she is at all times. Plans derail when Kim is kidnapped while she's checking in on the phone with her father, who coolly deals with the situation and stays on the line long enough to deliver a killer speech to her captors. What follows is Mills' one-man mission to get his daughter back within 96 hours, using whatever European contacts he has left and the special lethal skills he's quite adept at dishing out. And dish them out Neeson does. Audiences get a clear idea of what sort of pain is in store for the bad guys early on during the pop-star rescue, which sets up the kind of swift brutality this character is capable of. The actor finds a cool partner in Morel, who delivers the action with a satisfyingly steady hand -- especially in the knife-fight finale, where a full-frame, one-take technique is honored in order to pay off the claustrophobic cabin setting without resorting to superficial style to keep the audience's juices flowing. In the acting department, Neeson is a single-minded, stone-faced wonder -- ready to pummel whoever needs to be knocked down in order to get to his daughter. As the daughter, Grace fulfills the dual nature of her character's arc, delivering both doe-eyed innocence and wide-eyed hysteria with competence. Sadly, Famke Janssen gets lost in the shuffle for most of the film, though to be fair, this flick isn't as much about the mother back home, but the trained torturer dad who'll stop at nothing to bust some slave-trader butt. Taken might still be on the fluffy side the emotional beats, especially, feel forced, but it is of a higher pedigree than what action buffs have come to expect from French movie mogul Besson, whose post-directorial writer/producer stints range from the Transporter films to the tongue-in-explosive-cheek Taxi series. While cinephiles certainly won't flock to the flick, the inclusion of Neeson will hopefully tip some audiences off to the fact that there's something a little more to this intimate package than just your normal whiz-bang-pow big-budgeted romp. For fans of tough cinema, this is an installment worthy of comparison to the British crime films of old, which certainly share the narrow-minded propulsion of the plot, as well as having a venerable lead to chew the scenery as he pummels his way through a mystery. Needless to say, if you happen to be snatched up against your will, you could do a lot worse than have a Liam Neeson type waiting in the wings to brutalize his way to your rescue.

    Spy Game

    A great non-cheesy spy movie from the view of a father.

    I sat down to watch this movie thinking I was about to get a great action movie and not much more. I was blown away with the sincerity and emotional depth that I also found. The main character, Brian, is a retired spy who has retired to try and reform a bond with his daughter. Against his better judgement he lets her go to Paris for vacation where she is abducted by slave traders. This brought about the most chilling line in the whole movie, "...I will find you, and I will kill you." which was delivered as a statement not a threat.

    The resulting action filled parts of the movie show Brian tracking down the people who have taken his daughter and slowly going up the food chain in search of his daughter.

    What the movie got right, where so many others fail is that there is no mastermind, no villian, no great showdown. This is a story about what one man will do to get his daughter back.

    I will warn you that at the end you will not like Brian, but you will respect and understand what he is doing.

    Riviting Performance, Like Jason Bourne Aged 35 Years

    Bryan Mills is Jason Bourne aged 35 years and he doesn't miss a step or skip a beat -- the same speed and brutal force of physical confrontation. A riviting performance. This is what Jason Bourne at 60 years old would do if faced with the kidnapping of his daughter by an Albanian crime ring determined to sell her into white slavery. Good plot. If you liked the Bourne trilogy, you mustn't miss this film.

    I really like Liam Neeson, and I thought this was a great movie.

    I really like Liam Neeson, and I thought this was a great movie. The second one comes to theaters in just a little while. Hope it's as good as the first. The first movie wasn't incredibly big on any sort of complex plot, but I think that when one is on a race against time to save their kid, that's a perfect plot all by itself. Highly recommended.

    PERHAPS THE BEST CONCEIVED AND EXECUTED BLOOD SOAKED ACTION THRILLER --- EVER. 99.9% FLAWLESS --- .1% DEDUCTION FOR THE SUPERLATIVE LIAM NEESON'S PAINFULLY TOO DARK HAIR (TOUPEE?) COLOR --- WHICH ILL-FITTINGLY MATCHES HIS ON-SCREEN STILL HOT EX-WIFE'S PITIFUL ATTEMPT TO REGAIN FADED YOUTH. DEFINITELY NOT FOR THE POLITICALLY CORRECT SCRIPT IS SECOND TO NONE, AS ARE DIRECTION, CASTING, ACTING, PHOTOGRAPHY, AND EDITING. AND --- WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE ABOUT DEPOPULATING THE WORLD OF ALBANIAN AND ARAB THUGS CAUGHT DEALING IN KIDNAPPING, DRUGS AND UNDERAGE PROSTITUTION?

    Edge of Darkness

    Excellence in Action

    Liam Neeson doesn't have any qualms about portraying a man with a 17 year old daughter that is striving to spread her wings. Divorced, hurt for having not spent enough time with his only child, he portrays a caring man that will do anything for her. She's his world and, at every available opportunity, he attempts to find the way to prove it to her.
    Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson's character) worries, as parents do. When his daughter takes off to Paris with a friend, he does the normal call-me-when-you-get-there, etc. As a typical teen, she forgets, too involved in the wonders she has planned with her friend. The one phonecall she does answer is the single thread that her father has to hang onto in order to save her, knowing she has been taken.
    This is a high action, seat gripping action drama that I enjoyed thoroughly. Neeson's character is as ruthless as any parent would be in that effort to save their child from a fate worse than death

    It is a good movie to buy

    This is a exciting movie to watch.Liam Neeson does another wonderful job.He makes the character exciting and has the viewer cheering him on.The plot line is good.However,some things that happens you may over look as you watch.When the movie is over you will be asking yourself how was that possible on some scenes.Overall it is a good enough movie to buy and enjoy.

    Breathless Action Film that remains Human

    TAKEN is a fast paced, well designed and choreographed action thriller that details the return to duty of an intelligence man, whose career distanced him from his family, when his own daughter falls victim to the crime syndicate in Paris. The driver of this well written (Luc Besson! and Robert Mark Kamen), well directed (Pierre Morel) film is the non-stop violence filled mission of a desperate father whose skills at getting to the heart of a matter have not been diminished by his 'early retirement'.

    Liam Neeson is in grand form as Bryan Mills, the skilled and committed father who can out kill and out wit even the most vicious of the Albanian forces against whom he must struggle to save his kidnapped daughter from being sold into human slavery to an Arab sheik. The film moves so rapidly, with the skills of cinematographer Michel Abramowicz, that the various other characters who populate this drama scarcely have time to establish an identity (Famke Janssen, Radivoje Bukvic, Maggie Grace et al). The violence is constant but due to Bryan Mills' skills each death is so rapid that the camera doesn't linger There are scenes in the brothels where the drug induced young girls serve as prostitutes that are quite disturbing, but again the camera doesn't pause long enough to make them gruesome.

    This is a fine performance by Liam Neeson who demonstrates a mastery of the action roles that likely will lead to others in a similar vein. It is a wild ride, but a very fine one. Grady Harp

    horrible customer service

    This seller has horrible customer service! First he sent me the wrong dvd and he stated he was going to send me the right dvd and i still haven't received.

    Amazing

    I love this movie, it is so good. Keeps you on the edge of your seat. Worried and scared about what will happen. Liam Neeson is so good in this.

    Taken was SO amazing. Liam Neeson is 54, but acts like he's 30. It's like Jason Bourne, James Bond, and Ethan Hunt mixed together at age 50 or so. WATCH IT!

    wow

    I was expecting a good movie but it was an instant classic. The action isn't cheesy and very fast paced. There aren't any inappropriate one liners and the characters are well developed and believable. You are able to really feel as if your the father whose child has been taken into a horrible yet realistic situation.

    One of many great movies by Liam Neeson

    I enjoyed this movie. It was well done with great cast. I did not put 2 and 2 together like till the last minute like I do on 24. Taken is a get the movie now and enjoy it every time you put it in the dvd player. It is a #1 Liam Neeson movie. He's best movie he done yet till the next great movie he does. When well Taken 2 comes out???
