Overview

The spectacular hordes of Cossack horsemen flying across the steppes to do battle with first one enemy and then another are the highlights of this otherwise thinly scripted costume drama set in the 16th century in the Ukraine. After the Cossack leader Taras Bulba Yul Brynner makes a pact with the Poles to join forces against the Turks and drive them from the European steppes, victory brings betrayal as the Poles then turn on their ally and force the Cossacks into the hills. From there, Taras Bulba decides that ...

From there, Taras Bulba decides that one of his sons, Andrei Tony Curtis, will be sent to Polish schools to better learn the nature of their enemy. While away from home and hearth, the adult Andrei falls in love with a Polish noblewoman, Natalia Christine Kaufmann, who would become the second Mrs. Curtis. As time progresses, the tensions between father and son, loyalty and love, ethnic identity and assimilation steadily increase until they end in tragedy. Taras Bulba was nominated for a 1963 Academy Award for "Best Music," scored by Franz Waxman.

This is a great adventure film with romance and exciting battle scenes. It is worth watching for entertainment value. Yul Brynner and Tony Curtis are at their best in this film.

    I Also Recommend:

    Tired Bulba

"Taras Bulba" is one of those unfortunate expensive Hollywood actioners that is best represented by thousand of extras gathering on a field in brand-spanking-new period costumes (the ancient world must have been spectacular in it's dry cleaning capabilities) and waving scimitars in the air to simulate combat but without ever contacting an enemy sword. Remember boys, the costumes are rentals. Yul Brynner and Tony Curtis play father and son which should clue you in to the attention to detail. Based upon a story by the Russian author Gogol, one can only excuse the cardboard shoddiness of this enterprise by assuming that since it was produced at the height of the Cold War, it was a deliberate thumb-nosing at the Soviets. Somehow in the middle of all of this (incredibly, director J. Lee Thompson went on to make the shattering thriller "Cape Fear") lies one of the most beautiful scores ever written for an epic by the very fine Franz Waxman. Best recommendation: put on the movie, close your eyes, let the music wash over you and imagine a much better film.
