Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
After M-G-M dropped its Tarzan series in 1942, producer Sol Lesser purchased film rights to the character, cut a distribution deal with RKO, and re-secured the services of both Olympic swimming champ Johnny Weissmuller and young Johnny Sheffield, who continued to play the legendary Ape Man and Boy, respectively. Maureen O’Sullivan, the original Jane, passed on Lesser’s offer to reprise her role. Produced on a less extravagant scale than the earlier M-G-M entries in the series -- there were no massive elephant stampedes or hordes of rampaging natives -- the RKO Tarzans still delivered plenty of action. Lesser’s initial release, Tarzan Triumphs, (1943), is by far the best, with the jungle champion doing battle with Nazi invaders who seize control of a fabled lost city they plan to use as headquarters for the Third Reich’s latest African campaign. Frances Gifford, who played another Edgar Rice Burroughs-inspired heroine in Republic’s 1941 serial Jungle Girl, makes a fetching foil for Weissmuller as Zandra, daughter of the city’s rightful ruler, while Stanley Ridges is superb as the Nazi commander. Triumphs is indeed the winner, but Tarzan’s Desert Mystery (also 1943), Tarzan and the Amazons (1945), Tarzan and the Leopard Men (1946), Tarzan and the Huntress (1947), and Tarzan and the Mermaids (1948) are all chock-full of B-film thrills and adventure. Brenda Joyce makes her debut as Jane in Amazons; a statuesque beauty and a capable actress, she amply compensates for her costar’s shortcomings in the emoting department. Leopard Men, featuring a murderous native cult led by a ruthless high priestess (exotic 1940s starlet Acquanetta), is both the most suspenseful and violent of the collection’s films; Mermaids benefits from location shooting in Mexico (the story takes place on a tropical island), stylish direction by B-movie specialist Robert Florey, and an evocative musical score by Dimitri Tiomkin. Consistently entertaining, Weissmuller’s RKO Tarzans are, in their initial appearance in a home-video format, cause for celebration.
