Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Neither strictly sequel nor prequel, the produced-for-video Tarzan II tells how the young ape-boy discovered his destiny, as well as how he learned to surf tree limbs like a jungle Tony Hawk. It's still the same old Disney story: Young Tarzan -- just like Aladdin, Simba, Hercules, and Quasimodo before him -- is unsure of his place in the world and feels like a misfit. Believing his ape family (Glenn Close reprises the voice of loving matriarch Kala) would be better off without him, Tarzan runs away from home. His coming-of-age odyssey takes him to the foreboding Dark Mountain, where he runs afoul of gorilla outcasts. Tarzan's friendship and bravery in the face of danger reveal the unique gifts that make him the one-and-only Tarzan. Two new songs by Phil Collins (and a reprise of "Son of Man") help recapture some of the original film’s excitement, but from the scaled-down animation to the anachronistic, slang-driven dialogue, this is hardly the stuff of legend. Still, revisiting Tarzan as a child is a savvy marketing move that could make this franchise swing again with younger viewers.
