Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Great balls of kibble! Nathan Lane earns Best in Show honors for his tour-de-force performance as the voice of Spot, a blue canine "born on the wrong end of the leash." Spot not only follows his eight-year-old master Leonard to school, he actually attends classes under the guise of "Scot." But like a certain wooden puppet, he yearns to be a real boy. Before you can say, "It's alive," Spot is Florida-bound, headed for the swampland laboratory of mad scientist Dr. Krank (Kelsey Grammer), a modern Frankenstein who claims he can turn animals into humans. His two creations, an alligator boy (Paul "Pee-Wee Herman" Rubens) and an insect girl (Megan Mullally of Will and Grace) do not suggest a good outcome for Spot. In fact, thanks to Dr. Frank’s failure to calculate for dog years, Spot becomes a razor-stubbled Scott. Teacher's Pet stands to get a new leash on life on DVD. To paraphrase the lisping family cat, Mr. Jolly (David Ogden Stiers), this film is just right on so many levels. This whimsical hand-drawn feature, with its bold colors and surreal design, has the same out-of-nowhere delights that animated Disney's surprise hits The Emperor's New Groove and Lilo and Stitch. It moves at a breakneck pace that makes The Fairly Odd-Parents seem downright pokey, and it will take repeat viewings to catch all the verbal and visual gags. Among the musical numbers, "I Wanna Be a Boy," "I, Ivan Krank," "I'm Movin' On," and "Take the Money and Run" (performed by Jack Sheldon of Schoolhouse Rock fame) are real showstoppers. For those who want to bone up on the Emmy Award–winning series, the DVD contains the show’s premiere episode. Teacher's Pet is grade-A entertainment.
