A career soldier is forced to choose between following orders and saving lives in this action thriller. Lt. A.K. Waters (Bruce Willis) is a veteran Navy SEAL whose commander (Tom Skerritt) has given his team a special assignment. A Central African nation is expected to explode into war at any moment, and Waters and his cohorts are to escort any American citizens in the area to safety, most notably Dr. Lena Kendricks (Monica Bellucci), a doctor from the United States who has set up a clinic in the jungle. Waters and his men find Kendricks, but she refuses to leave with them unless she can bring along 70 refugees who have been left to her care. Kendricks makes it clear that if they are left behind, the refugees will face certain death, but Waters's C.O. insists he bring back Kendricks -- but not her patients. Forced by his conscience to disobey orders, Waters and his team race against time to escort the refugees to a border town where they will find safe haven before invading troops can ambush them. Tears of the Sun (which was produced under the title Man of War) also features Cole Hauser and Fionnula Flanagan.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Bruce Willis and the ravishing Monica Bellucci star in this suspenseful war movie, a genre offering that studiously avoids the clichés of jingoistic shoot-’em-ups in favor of a more intellectually and emotionally satisfying approach. Tears of the Sun reflects with surprising accuracy the horrors being perpetrated daily in African nations convulsed by civil war fomented by antagonistic ethnic groups. Willis portrays Navy SEAL lieutenant A. K. Waters, who leads a special-operations team into the Nigerian jungle to find Italian-born doctor Lena Hendricks (Bellucci), an American citizen by marriage, before she can be captured (or worse) by marauding rebels heading for her makeshift hospital. Lena refuses to leave unless the American soldiers agree to lead her African patients to safety -- a nearly impossible undertaking that would undermine Waters's clearly defined mission. Director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) renders the atrocities of African warfare in excruciating detail, but his depictions are neither gratuitous nor exploitative; they underline the severity of current conditions and amplify the moral dilemma faced by the American commander: Can he stick to his narrowly defined mission and allows scores of wounded refugees to be slaughtered? Willis, who invested many of his former heroes with macho insouciance, brings a welcome maturity and gravitas to his characterization of Waters. Bellucci, of whom the script demands considerably less, makes an attractive and engaging foil -- albeit one whose true motives are shrouded in secrecy. The battle scenes are excellently done and not overtly sensationalistic, and the relentless pursuit of the SEALs and refugees by the brutal rebels adds nail-biting suspense. Very much in the current tradition of war movies that refuse to glorify war, Tears of the Sun provides two hours of provocative and eminently satisfying entertainment.
Entertainment Weekly
Antoine Fuqua, coming off Training Day, knows how to stage a skirmish in the foliage so that each leaf glistens with waxy moonlit peril. Owen Gleiberman
Boston Globe
At its best, the film is a nightmare embossed on a postcard -- horrific and ominously gorgeous. Wesley Morris

Just about every film Antoine Fuqua makes is amazing. Throw Bruce Willis into the mix and you have a guarantee of quality cinema. This movie can be best summarized by the quote at the end, stating that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. Now, some of the things the commandos do can be called into question, such as standing together in the small clearing before going into the village to kill the soldiers who are murdering everyone - not a good idea if the bad guys did happen to have a sniper in the surrounding area somewhere, or if someone in the village just happened to look up in that direction and spot them all. But otherwise this story carries an extremely powerful message, great acting, scenery and music and I found the combat scenes to be wildly intense.

Best movie since Saving Private Ryan. This action packed movie teaches a lesson about caring and bravery. Leader of a callous Navy Seal team (Bruce Willis) brings his men back into the war zone to help defend the African people from the rebel forces. While watching this video I was in aw. I had know idea that the rebel forces committed those kinds of treacherous things. A lot of it was Hollywood but director Antoine Fuqua made it look reasonable. I blinked about twenty times during the movie trying to capture every little part. The warfare in this movie is incredible. This is the perfect movie for you if you love action movies.

This is one of my favorite movies. I watch it all the time. It is a good movie. This movie could actual be a true story and that is what i like about it. Things like this happen in Africa all the time. This movie can make people aware of things going on in other countries. I love Cole Hauser in this movie.

I thought this movie was gonna be action packed, but the action didn't really pickup till around the end. But after watching this I learned that not only the action should entertain you. once you get to watch and know the charaters you get to feel for them. Yes that does happen in lots of movies, But this one seemed to do it quite well. But overall it's worth a check.

Excellent score, outstanding action, important story to portray. I think this is one of a great movie. I was initially turned off by the subject matter...war...Africa...action, but I sat through it. I was moved. It is a great story. Missing this movie would be a shame. You must see it at some point in your life. As another reviewer indicated, it a better than Blackhawk Down and a lot of other movies that I've enjoyed in the past. It is a must-see. If this movie does not move you, you're made of stone. Oooohya!

From a girl who has seen many many movies, take it from me that this one is a keeper. While most movies fail to grasp that 'feeling' this one does, and it holds on hours after you watch it. It is simply amazing and has left me speechless every time i've seen it. It not only has action and intelligence, but great character development and a love story that goes far beyond your average chick flick. In light of present times, this film also helps you to understand a bit about life outside our free world. It is beautifully put together and there is no question that the emotion and passion is there. I highly doubt that the contribtors to this movie read Barnes & Noble online reviews, but I'd like to thank them, cause it is truly amazing.
