Set ten years after the events of 1991's Terminator 2: Judgement Day, the film finds Connor living on the streets as a common laborer. Sarah Connor, his mother, has since died, and their efforts in the second film have not stopped the creation of SkyNet artificial intelligence network. As he will still become the leader of the human resistance, Connor is once again targeted by a Terminator sent from the future by SkyNet. This new Terminator, T-X Kristanna Loken, is a female and is more powerful than any of her predecessors. To protect Connor, the human resistance sends a new T-101 Arnold Schwarzenegger back from the future. In the post-millennia sea of overblown action epics with inflated running times, the third installment in the Terminator franchise is a lean, mean breath of action, defying most low expectations and proving that you don't have to be James Cameron to know what makes this successful and entertaining series tick. What T3 does effectively is bring back the mix of highly intense action, character-driven humor, and technological wizardry that the big screen had been lacking for more than a decade since Terminator 2: Judgment Day. There's a direct understanding of the series core dynamics, and once things kick in, there's no doubt that you're back in Terminator-land. Arnold Schwarzenegger eases back into the role effortlessly, bringing an understanding to the lovable cyborg that goes beyond simple line delivery and stoic screen presence. Joining him are Nick Stahl and Claire Danes, new faces to the Terminator films that bring fresh energy to the work, especially Stahl's wearied approach to John Conner. Danes is an unlikely choice, but made a suitable (if not just too "known") substitute when her role was recast when the first actress was deemed "too young" during filming. It's not too easy to follow up Robert Patrick's steely-eyed breakout performance either, but Kristanna Loken's deadly TX Terminator manages to put her own villainous stamp on the series -- easily holding her own against Schwarzenegger's iconic screen presence. This being his big-time proving ground, Mostow pulls off the once-deemed impossible feat and cranks out a Terminator flick that embraces audience's popcorn sensibilities without any of the personal flash or style upon which some of his bigger, more-expensive peers thrive. It doesn't hurt that he also surrounded himself with the same visionaries behind the series' highly evolved special effects work, namely Stan Winston and Industrial Light and Magic. With unprecedented practical robotic effects mixed with top-of-the-line (at the time) CG work, the big screen magicians deliver some truly show-stopping moments that are pure movie-making magic. Score-wise, the classic theme and its composer Brad Fidel are indeed sorely missed. There's nothing in Marco Beltrami's work that matches the urgency of Fidel, even if the filmmakers knew exactly when and where to use it. Naturally, many other criticisms have been levelled against the film -- some valid and some not, though all come down to a matter of personal taste when it comes down to it. Even considering most of the arguments, Rise of the Machines still proves its worth thanks to its ingenious ending that leaves John Conner in the exact place that his character needs to be left in the series -- something that this entry desperately needed to prove its inclusion. Schwarzenegger did come "back" for this one, and audiences everywhere should thank him for it.

    Cheese Factor

    I loved the idea of this movie because eventually you knew where it would end up. When Terminator Salvation came out, it practically erased T3 altogether. The unfortunate thing about Rise Of The Machines is it barely seemed like a real Terminator movie. The acting felt flimsy and corny, the chemistry between Nick Stahl and Arnold Schwarzenegger was nil. Not that I dislike Nick Stahl in any way, he just wasn't the right fit to play John Connor. He didn't have the look or the conviction to commit to the character. Another sad point is that Linda Hamilton's pivotal character Sarah Connor was killed off prematurely. Only her name is uttered in the moive. Claire Danes didn't do too bad. The newest character, which happens to be female, a machine called the TX, only added to the fun. T1 and T2 felt dark and apocalyptic--you got a since that life as we knew it would come to an end. When T3 ended, I almost didn't care much, even though the ending was somewhat frightening. Over all I didn't mind watching Rise Of The Machines, it just felt more like a movie to pass the time until the next one was filmed. More like something you'd wanna watch on HBO or Showtime or something of that nature.

    T2 ended the franchise.

    James Cameron made the first two movies as only he can ending them in a satisfying manner. Although I can enjoy this movie as long as I try not to think about the inconsistencies it's still a pretender to the quality that comes from a Cameron movie. He also doesn't try to cheapen the franchise with multiple squeals past a reasonable point. The Alien squeals are a good example. Ridley Scott did a great job in the first installment but Cameron ended it with perhaps the greatest movie in this (SF) class. Remarkably detailed real looking sets, great action, and stunning special effects that still look good today. The others were trash in comparison.

    Good for a summer movie, but disappointing ending to a great story!

    As far as I'm concerned, there is only one John Connor, and that is Edward Furlong. Nothing against Nick Stahl as an actor, but Edward Furlong was the true John Connor. And I think nothing bad of Jonathan Mostow, but James Cameron should have directed this and continued his own vision of how the Terminator story was to be played out. T2 was such a good movie, and brings back GREAT memories of when I got into Home Theater back in the early 90's. I had the T2 LaserDisc box set $129.99, and I remember driving around in my RX-7 at the time playing the Guns 'N Roses song "You Could Be Mine" real loud. Anyway, T2 was awesome and brings back such good memories. James Cameron had such a great story, and T3, still an alright movie though, don't get me wrong, just kinda ruined the otherwise awesome storyline that James Cameron created. I can't accept Nick Stahl as John Connor. I can't accept that Sarah Connor died. I mean why? Why did they kill her off? The relationship between Arnold and Edward & Linda in T2 was beautiful! You could believe in their relationship and feel a part of their struggle. In T3, Arnold and Nick barely acted like they gave a crap about anything and didn't have that bond like Arnold and Edward had in T2. I don't know, I wonder if I'm the only one who feels this way. Anyway, T3 was only good from a summer movie point-of-view for me, but a big let down for me storywise! It almost hurts in a way how bad the story was, but I'll deal with it and just watch T1 and T2 when I want my Terminator fix!

    Disappointing and VERY inconsistent

    This is far from the worst movie I have ever seen, but it is equally as far away from being the best of the Terminator trilogy (so far). The new T-X terminator is definitely attractive, but is otherwise pretty useless to the plot as a whole. Her capabilities are either amazingly good or conveniently inadequate based on the requirements of the plot. Also, once again we have the clothing paradox raised in T2 as well -- if this shape-shifting terminators can simply generate clothing, then why do they need to find clothing when they first arrive in the past? This new "terminatrix" kills some poor woman for her dress, but is still wearing this same dress even after it would have had to be burned beyond all repair shortly thereafter. I was also left with the impression that her control over machines was somehow supposed to be what stimulated the takeover of SkyNet, however in the end she had absolutely nothing to do with it (so what was the point of her having that skill?). Let us hope that if there is a T4, that Ah-nuld has the common sense to stay out of it (he was really too old to have done this one), and let us also hope they can entice James Cameron to take the franchise back (even if he does not have a girlfriend/wife in the cast). All in all, a silly sequel, but full of all of the action you would expect from a Terminator picture.

    Not enough...

    Well, this movie splits "generation T" - as can be seen from the reviews on this page. If you are mainly interested in some cool special effects, this sequel won’t disappoint you, but if you were expecting more than just plain action, it definitely will. T3 is neither as chilling as the first nor as ingenious as the second part. A feeling of deja vu came up while watching this film. As in Alien 3, the writers of the sequel were obviously faced with the overwhelming challenge of having to continue the story of a great first and an even better second part, spoiling the latter in the process and leaving a more than sour taste. On top of that, T3 also inherited the clumsiness of Matrix Reloaded: It takes almost an hour into the film until the story actually gets started, and the dialogues are frequently stale and appear sometimes forced. If you want to own a Terminator on DVD, better make it the Extreme-DVD version of T2!

    Terminator 3

    What were they thinking not putting James Cameron as director and adding Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor and Edward Furlong as grown up John Connor ? Now the story is way to complicated to ask those tons of questions about the movies and let's just be happy that Arnold is in all three but what about the forth ?

    Garbage

    I think they totaly screwed up the whole series of Terminator movies. In the first terminator movie, a terminator is trying to kill Sarah Connor becuase that is John's mom. The funny thing is Reece gets Sarah pregnant, but he is also from the future and sent by John. How is that possible? Reece would have to be from the present to get Sarah pregnant. Also reece said they destroyed all the terminators exept for the one that has time traveled. HMM. Why would their two terminators in terminator two and three? In terminator 2 they killed that niles guy and blew up the computer lab to prevent computers from kill humans. Also in Terminator 3 a virus infects all the computers. Hmm. When they launch cyberdine systems all the computers in the world get taken over. John said it was ment to happen, the virus was cyberdine systems. No it wastnt, cyberdine was a set of programs used by the GOVT. The virus was made by a hacker.

    I like the actors more in T2

    I thought the actors T2 were better especially Edward Furlong he is much better than Nick Stahl as John Conner in T3. I also wish that Linda Hamilton didn't die of the disease of Lucemea like it said in the script. I thought that she did well in T2.

    The Best! Saw It 2 Times in the Theater!

    I completely loved this movie. The action was great! The plot was fantastic!(The ending was a great opening to a Terminator 4) Arnold was great. (as usual) Nick Stahl was a great refreshment as John Connor. I was tired of Edward Furlong's performance. Kristanna Lokken was a great villian. And Claire Daines presented a wonderful performance. Suprisingly, her role was VERY important to the film. The special effects were hardly noticeable, which was why I liked this better than the Matrix Reloaded. Although, at times the humor was too heavy. But, nonetheless, this was an outstanding film. I can't wait to own this DVD! And I hope that everone else considers watching it. It's way worth it!!

    It could have been better

    First, I was thinking that the movie was good, not fantastic but good. But after a second view my disapointement was obvious. Too short, too already seen before, too linear, and not enough surprising !

    Pleasantly surprised! A worthy successor

    When I first saw the theatrical trailer, I thought, this movie will be a dud! I was most pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The movie deals with the situation 10 years later from T2, when a new Terminatrix (an impressive performance by Kristanna Loken) is sent to kill John Connor (played by Nick Stahl) and his earthly friends who will be lieutenants in the future. John Connor is accompanied by Kate Brewster (played by Claire Danes), who will be an important leader in the future. I really liked many aspects of this movie: First, I thought the cast was really good, especially Kristanna Loken who as the new Terminator is sexy yet very lethal. Claire Danes is very effective in her role as well. Arnold Schwarzneggar is excellent as usual. The only drawback is the selection of Nick Stahl as Connor; he seems confused and scared most of the time; I felt that he was not charismatic enough to be a believable hero. Secondly, I thought the director Jonathan Mostow did an excellent job; the action sequences were spectacular and the special effects were impressive. Thirdly, I liked the story and the ending which catches the audience by surprise. The second DVD offers many special features, such as a behind the scenes look at the movie, featurettes, and audio commentaries from the cast and director. I enjoyed this movie a lot and I felt it was a worthy successor to T1 and T2.

    Very good movie!

    When you think about it, T3: Rise of the Machines has a similarity to T2: Judgment Day. Some of the scenes seem similar to the previous film. But it was still fast pace and it kept me interested in the film. In this film (unlike many other action films that have come out in recent years) it has not only good action sequences, but a storyline with characters ou actually care about. The visuals are far better than the previous films in the series. The acting was great. And also the storyline was good. My only problem, like previously stated, is that some scenes are very similar to T2. The scene in which the Terminator gets his clothes are very similar to the beginning scene in T2. In these scenes, they both beats up a man in leather cloths in a club are very much the same. Only this time, it is a strip club rather than a bar. Still despite the scenes that are merely clones of the previous film, this is still a great movie that should not be missed by any.

    Arianna Huffington jokes are so two years ago.

    I went into this movie fully expecting a really lame movie that made up for no plot by having a gargantuan budget. I really hated this movie...for all of three seconds. This movie was a great follow up to the first two films, and it gave Not-so-funny late night talk show hosts really bad California Election jokes!! Nice twist ending to finish off the series( at least until part IV).

    Best Terminator film, by far!!

    I saw this 2 times at the theater. Great flick. Effects were sooo much better than in the first two films. The T-X was menacing....and hot. Arnold had much more of a significance in this film. Nick Stahl is better at being John Conner than Edward Furlong. I was so sick of Conner saying the ''s'' word thoughout T2. And the adding of Claire Danes character, Kate Brewster was perfect. Good job director, Jonathan Mostow.

    Back And Better Than Ever

    Arnold's back and better than ever in T3. Its much better than the first two. T3 has a great story and great special FX also.

    Energizing

    Gave my day a lift. Enjoyed as much as the other two, wouldn't mind another sequal. Perhaps after California.

    Great Film

    This film was spectacular. You can really tell Jonathon Marstow directed it as a fan and he respected the guidelines created by the two previous films. Plus, the end was one of the best movie endings I have ever been forunate enough to view.

    Surprized me!

    I went to this flik thinking it would be a rehash of T2, substituting a blonde hottie for the new generation terminator of T2, but was pleasantly surprized. The plot actually pulls you in new directions and doesn't just rely on T2's success for its energy. The action is very intense and yet is plot driven, interjecting nume rous humerous moments. The plot breaks new territory and keeps the surprizes coming. Seen it twice now; can't wait till I get my DVD copy!

    Terminator Does it Again!

    Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is the third movie in the Teminator lineup... and easily the best. Non-stop action and a well-writen plot isure that this movie will keep you on the edge of your seat!
