Troma Team Pictures, the company that brought you such classics as The Toxic Avenger, When Nature Calls and Class Of Nuke 'Em High, takes a look inside the making of a "typical" Troma release with Terror Firmer, directed and co-written by Troma co-founder Lloyd Kaufman, who also appears as the director of the film-within-the film. Here, Kaufman (whose character is blind, which would explain a lot about Troma's product) and his crew are making a willfully sleazy horror flick, complete with monsters, gore, gratuitous nudity and loud rock 'n' roll, when a serial killer appears who doesn't happen to be in the script. Terror Firmer is based in part on Kaufman's 1998 book about his career with Troma, All I Need To Know About Filmmaking I Learned From The Toxic Avenger, and includes a plug for the upcoming Jane Austen's Schlock and Schlockability (possibly a follow-up to 1996's Shakespeare variant Tromeo and Juliet).

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Tony Nigro
Terror Firmer assumes a guerrilla spirit similar to that of John Waters's Cecil B. Demented, celebrating underground cinema while simultaneously deconstructing it -- in particular, the cinematic anarchy of Troma Studios and director Lloyd Kaufman The Toxic Avenger. The story is relentlessly self-referential -- and violent -- following a Troma movie crew including many actual crew members and their director Kaufman, who happens to be blind, as they are mysteriously murdered. The cartoonish film proudly hammers home a message of low-budget righteousness, as the crew dies for their special brand of art at the hands of a killer who is a devout fan of mainstream Hollywood. And the murders are creatively twisted -- a 400-pound man "eaten" by an escalator takes the cake. Loosely inspired by Kaufman's autobiography, Terror Firmer marks the 25th anniversary of his renegade studio and never misses a chance to promote it with tongue placed firmly in cheek. Despite its inherent shoddiness corn syrup for blood and melons for crushed heads are the Troma dictum, Terror Firmer is much more than just another midnight movie. Indeed, it is one of the studio's most inspired films. The 2-disc, highly "Tromatic" DVD edition is available in both rated and unrated versions and includes a feature-length behind-the-scenes documentary, multiple audio commentaries unrated version only, an option to view deleted scenes in the movie, a Troma video game, and boundless other bizarre treats.
