Overview

Columbia Pictures finally unleashes the disco hit Thank God It's Friday onto the world of DVD in a rather stellar package that's all flash on the outside and empty on the inside (much like disco itself!). While it truly is great that this sucker is finally getting released -- it's even hyped accordingly on the back cover -- did they have to spend zero money and time on the disc itself? With a main menu that is actually a default menu screen on computer burning software everywhere, this big-studio release is pretty shameful when it all comes down to it, made extra weird thanks to the mystery surrounding the Asian warning screens that pop up after the disc is inserted. There are no trailer or chapter selections for that matter, though the flick was given an anamorphic 1.85:1 picture, so at least the movie itself wasn't given that much of a shaft in that regard. Still, the shabby production on this disc is worth noting -- especially for such a large studio as Columbia Pictures.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Fred Beldin
For a time capsule, Thank God It's Friday holds up pretty well, featuring some very funny performances, lightweight action, and glittery energy. Whether or not the disco era produced great music is a matter of opinion, though the film is packed with top-notch examples of the sound, from dance diva Donna Summer's Oscar-winning signature tune "Last Dance" to the spectacularly physical funk of the Commodores. Future stars Debra Winger and Jeff Goldblum do well in these early appearances, though it's Chick Vennera who stands out as the vivacious Leather Man, dispensing disco wisdom to the faithful and performing a show-stopping dance number upon the hoods of parked cars. While about as brain dead as the average Love Boat episode, Thank God It's Friday is still sharp enough to be entertaining, especially for those with an affection for the lost years of the late '70s.

This is THE disco movie! Yeah, it's cheezy, bit this is fun cheddar at it's ripest. I'm so glad this is out to add to my classic DVD collection. The Commodores, Donna Summer, Jackie the Pill Lady, the "Leather Man", Jeff Goldblum at his skeeviest...YUM! Now I don't have to cue the TiVo to catch it chopped up on AMC.
