Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
From the Beverly Hillbillies dropping in on their Petticoat Junction friends in Hooterville to Jay (The Critic) Sherman having dinner with The Simpsons, it's a time-honored TV tradition for characters from one show to drop in on characters from another. This Disney Channel crossover event, a ratings bonanza in 2006, brings together the network's three top-rated tween-coms: That's So Raven, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, and Hannah Montana. In "Checkin' Out," Raven accompanies her fashion designer boss to the Tipton Hotel for a photo shoot that predictably goes awry, until Raven recruits Zack and Cody to stand in as fashion models. In "That's So Suite Life of Hannah Montana," Raven, stranded at the Tilton, has a catastrophic psychic vision of the surprise party the twins are throwing for their mother. Meanwhile, Maddie (Ashley Tisdale from High School Musical) tries to get spoiled and self-absorbed hotel heiress London to wear one of Raven's designs. London refuses until another hotel guest, pop star Hannah Montana (Miley Cyrus), shows an interest. The trilogy concludes on a rockin' note with "On the Road Again," in which Hannah encourages her father/manager, Robbie Ray (real-life dad Billy Ray), the former "honky-tonk heartthrob," to return to the stage. The Not So Suite Life of Hannah Montana triples the fun for fans of all three shows. Save for the occasional clever gag (London's talking mirror speaks in the sassy timbre of Paul Lynde), and invaluable comic assists from game character actors (Jasmine Guy as reclusive fashion photographer Pistache and Richard Portnow as Robbie Ray's agent, Marty Klein), adults need not check in.
