What the other guys don't know is that Trish has just gotten out of a bad relationship, and has informed Andy she isn't ready to be intimate with him just yet. The 40-Year-Old Virgin was the first feature film directed by Judd Apatow, who previously served as a writer and producer for the well-regarded television shows Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, and The Larry Sanders Show.

Comedian Steve Carell has quickly gone from a correspondent’s slot on Comedy Central's Daily Show to an ace-in-the-hole scene-stealer in such hits as Bruce Almighty, Anchorman, and Bewitched. But few saw him as a leading man, at least until this winning comedy became a surprise box-office smash. The film's title tells you the basic premise: Carell plays Andy Spitzer, a nice guy who never quite got around to getting it on, and who has filled that void in his life with video games and collectible '70s action figures. He works in the stock room of an electronics megastore, where his co-workers Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen, and Romany Malco view him as "the quiet type." But when the guys find out that Andy's sexual history is a blank slate, it becomes their mission to change his course. This involves a series of hilarious bad dates and some of the worst relationship advice ever heard. At one point, Rogen's character tells Andy, "Be stoic; like David Caruso in Jade.” He also meets a sweet single mom Catherine Keener who may be The One. The most infamous scene, however, is when the guys take Andy to get his chest waxed -- which Carell actually endured on-camera -- and the stream of vulgarities unleashed from his mouth during it rivals that of anything heard in Scarface. Actually, the whole of The 40-Year-Old Virgin is a no-holds-barred raunch-fest that makes such R-rated comedies as The Wedding Crashers or even There's Something About Mary seem tame by comparison. But the screenplay, co-written by Carrell and director Judd Apatow Freaks and Geeks, never forgets that filthy isn't automatically funny. You need real jokes, which Virgin has in spades, rivaling Wedding Crashers as 2005's funniest film. Apatow and Carrell also understand that it doesn’t hurt to have likable characters, a generous dose of heart, or an out-of-the-blue musical number. You'll laugh -- a lot. You may even cry. But won't go running to get a wax job any time soon.

Judd Apatow's directorial debut, The 40-Year-Old Virgin accomplishes something very rare for a comedy, it is a very funny, bawdy sex comedy that transcends the genre because of the three-dimensional characters and the subtle acting. Steve Carell created his character while part of Chicago's Second City troupe, and like all of the best sketches they produce, the laughs come more from the human behavior of the characters than in the situation itself. Carell's pitch-perfect performance is matched by Catherine Keener who creates a warm, appealing, intelligent woman who would believably fall for Carell's character. All the supporting players (Paul Rudd, Seth Rogan, Jane Lynch, and the rest) are given fully realized characters to play, making the outrageous behavior even funnier because the audience can relate to the people even if the actions seem outlandish. The screenplay is both full of big laugh lines and works as a perfectly structured romantic comedy. In lesser hands, this would have become a one-note comedy, but The 40-Year-Old Virgin is a comedy symphony.

    "A movie for laugh lovers!"

    "Comedy of the Year". The 40 year old virgin grabbed my attention. A young man in his 40's never married and still a virgin. The jokes thrown at him make it all the funnier. He is a huge collector of legendary action figures and things of that sort. Basically he collects what most young adolecent boys do. He is so cooped up in his own world with a day to day plan for everything untill his friends at work intervene. They invite this hilarious 40 year old virgin out to play cards with them and what they discover is much worse (to them)than a bad hand in cards.They begin talking about what most single guys do while playing cards and and having some drinks. The virgin is asked questions up to the point that the guys start to become suspicious. Unlike what they had thought for the last 2 years of working with him he wasn't a serial killer or have some freaky fantasys he was a virgin. The laughs after this and the humor thrown at you is nothing short of funny. The guys from work try in there own ways to get this 40 year old out there on the town. They take him out to a bar where he ends up taking home a drunkened broad with a breathlizer key ignition.Her karokee was almost as bad as her intoxicated driving. Nothing better than ending the night than getting vomited all over by a drunk girl who had eaten shell-fish just hours earlier.The 40 year old virgin will make you laugh and possibly tear-up when he starts falling for a woman in the ebay store across the street. I definately recommend this movie to those out there that love a good laugh every now and then I can promise if you love that you will be laughing for awhile.

    "A movie for Laugh Lovers"

    "A truly funny comedy" If you haven't seen the 40 year old virgin your missing out. A man in his 40's still unmarried and a virgin.The 40 year old virgin is still stuck in the 6th grade. He is a huge fan of action figures and collects them. When he is not working at the electronics store he is at home working on making his figures more valuable. The guys at work are suspicious of what he is really all about. One even proposes the 40 year old virgin is a serial killer. They quickly find that a very false statement when they invite him to play cards one night. They are being usual men talking about things of the sort when one comes across and asks if he is a virgin. The humor thrown at you there after is nothing short of hilarious! They take him out to bring him out of his shell but nothing good comes of it except riding home with a drunkened girl that has a breathalizer for an ignition. No better way to have ended his night that getting vomited on by the same girl who had eaten shell fish only hours earlier. The 40 year old virgin is one show that will take you on a ride. If you like to laugh you will love this. It is a truly eye watering expierence.

    Destined to be a classic!!!

    No matter how times, you see this movie, it is still hilarious. This has to be the funniest movie I have seen in a long time. A raunchy, yet sweet buddy film with a lot of truth to it.

    FUNNY

    Sometimes this movie was a little uncomfortable to watch because of the really messed up situations this guy gets into, but it delivered the laughs and then some!

    Diaper time!

    You wonder how you can compare the word funny from one movie to the next. "This was the funniest movie I ever saw"/ "That was REALLY FUNNY"/ "It doesn't get any funnier than this one"/ I think the word FUNNY is the problem, it falls short in trying to describe the emotion experienced while watching this movie. A true classic that can be watched over and over again with the same hillarious response!

    HILARIOUS

    This movie is up there as one of the funniest movies of 2005. I was very pleased by everything in this movie, especially the humor. The humor can be a little extreme at times, but it certainly doesn't ruin anything it just makes it funnier. This movie is just great, buy it now!

    Funniest movie I have seen in a while!

    The movie was hilarious. Steve Carrell was genious and reminded me of the guy in office space. You have to watch this movie!
