Barnes & Noble
If alien abduction can be looked at as a fundamental commerce of UFO-paranoia films, The 4400 is the flip side: a mass return of used goods. Cooked up by former Star Trek: The Next Generation writers Ira Steven Behr and René Echevarria, this sci-fi series debuted in July 2004 on the USA Network with a 5-episode run. In the two-hour premiere, a cometlike ball of light enters the atmosphere from space, explodes in a small town in Washington State, and leaves behind 4,400 people. Some of them have been missing for up to 60 years, others only a few months, but none have aged, and all of them now have superhuman abilities. The job of sifting through all this not-exactly-damaged goods falls upon Homeland Security agents Tom Baldwin Taken veteran Joel Gretsch and Diana Skouris Jacqueline McKenzie. Baldwin has a personal stake in the investigation, since his nephew Shawn Patrick Flueger has just been returned with The 4400. Shawn and Tom's son Kyle Chad Faust were together on the night of Shawn's disappearance, but it is Kyle who has been in a mysterious coma ever since. Other abductees include: Richard Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, a black man from the '50s who now gets to experience life without segregation; Lily Laura Allen, a woman who returns pregnant from her disappearance; and Maia Conchita Campbell, a young girl who has been missing for over 60 years. As for those aforementioned abilities: Shawn can now give or take life energy; Maia can see into the future; and Lily can communicate with her unborn child. Individual episodes focus on other 4400 returnees, beginning with "The New & Improved Carl Morrissey," featuring Sex and the City fixture David Eigenberg as a 4400 vet who decides to use his powers against muggers. Oz regular Lee Tergesen figures prominently in "Becoming," wherein the feds suspect he’s using his powers of influence to spur murders. "Trial by Fire" finds the 4400, now scattered around the country, targeted by bombings. The final episode, "White Light," reveals the truth behind the disappearances but still leaves the audience guessing. Fortunately for fans, USA is expected to renew The 4400 for another 13 episodes in 2005.

Season 2 of this hit sci-fi cable series picks up a year after the events of Season 1, in which it was revealed that the 4400 hadn't been abducted by aliens but by future humans, in the hopes of saving the world from destruction. As the opener "Wake-Up Call" begins, Agents Tom Baldwin Joel Gretsch and Diana Skouris Jacqueline McKenzie of the National Threat Assessment Center NTAC have been separated as partners until a disturbance reunites them at a psychiatric hospital -- where they meet one of the patients, Kevin Burkoff Jeffrey Combs, who will play a larger role at the end of the season. Meanwhile, entrepreneur Jordan Collier Billy Campbell opens "the 4400 Center," in order to help other abductees realize their roles as the saviors of humanity. Richard Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Lily Laura Allen, and their daughter Isabelle must flee their home to the 4400 Center after Isabelle starts exhibiting superhuman powers. And Tom's son Kyle Chad Faust is under observation at NTAC after being awakened from a coma by his cousin Shawn Patrick Flueger. Maia Conchita Campbell continues to experience pre-cognitive visions, and Diana decides to adopt her to keep her from becoming an NTAC test subject. In "Suffer the Children," Shawn becomes Collier's assistant, partly because his powers of healing bring in money for the Center. In "As Fate Would Have It," the strange blackouts Kyle had been suffering since awakening lead to a horrifying occurrence at the Center. In the best episode of the season, "Life Interrupted," Tom's life is turned upside down when he wakes up one day to discover that the 4400 were never returned -- and that he has a wife, Alana The L Word's Karina Lombard. By the season's final two episodes, "The Fifth Page" and "Mommy's Bosses," Tom and Diana discover that NTAC is behind a mass illness infecting the 4400, and they are forced to go up against their superior, Dennis Ryland Peter Coyote, to save the lives of those afflicted.

Season 3 of the USA Network hit The 4400 veers off in a slightly different direction than its previous two seasons. Through Seasons 1 and 2, the 4400 -- the people who were transported through time for mysterious reasons -- have been harassed and persecuted. Even after creating the 4400 Center, which was meant to be a safe haven, the abductees are still in danger from the government and the National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC). It was revealed in Season 2 that NTAC was behind a mass illness infecting the 4400, and in Season 3, the 4400 strike back. The newly formed terrorist organization called the Nova Group -- comprising 4400 abductees -- begin launching attacks on the government. Jordan Collier (Billy Campbell) who, as leader of the 4400 Center, is conspicuously absent, turns up later in the season to help the Nova members. Meanwhile, Shawn (Patrick Flueger) becomes the head of the Center with the assistance of Richard (Mahershalalhashbaz Ali), after Richard's wife, Lily (Laura Allen), dies and his daughter, Isabelle (now played by Megalyn Echikunwoke), ages mysteriously into a full-grown woman with incredibly strong powers. What Richard doesn't know is that Shawn and Isabelle are carrying on an affair, and they try and keep it secret from the rest of the Center. Also, say goodbye to regular Chad Faust as Kyle Baldwin, who was imprisoned for murdering Jordan Collier in Season 2. Of course, it was a murder he didn't actually commit, and in "The Gospel According to Collier," Kyle gets an unexpected visitor. We end the season as Tom (Joel Gretsch) and Diana (Jacqueline McKenzie) of NTAC investigate just what Jordan Collier is up to, and Isabelle's powers become even more dangerous.

Before LOST there was the 4400

This is one of the best. I watched it originally on USA, and was so surprised when it only went 4 seasons, but the way it ended was perfect. It was well written and surprising. The relationships between the charactors were interesting and complex and it was a joy to watch.
