Overview

Fans of Arnold Schwarzenegger's delirious science fiction mind-bender Total Recall may find themselves right at home with this action-packed tale of replicants, reanimators, and clones. And like the movie itself, Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment's special edition DVD is packed with enough bells and whistles to wile away plenty of serious couch time. The two-disc set features the film in its original theatrical widescreen presentation (2.35:1 enhanced) and with a very robust and active English language 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack (French, Spanish, and Portuguese language options are also available). The picture is superb, as is to be expected, coming off clean, color balanced, and sharp throughout. The 5.1 soundtrack contains some nice active channel separation, while still keeping the dialogue audible. Disc one also contains an audio commentary track with composer Trevor Rabin (guitarist from the band Yes) with an isolated 5.1 music score. The track will surely be of interest to budding film composers, though all others may want to stay away. Disc two contains plenty of other digital goodies, including nine behind-the-scenes featurettes chronicling all facets of the movie's production, especially the wonderful special effects work; the Showtime special "The Future Is Coming" (which doesn't really offer anything of any importance); storyboard comparisons; the amusingly surreal and macabre RePet infomercials and TV spots in their entirety; theatrical trailers; filmographies; and more. For fans of the movie, you can now safely dispose of the previously released no-frills disc.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Recent scientific advancements lend credibility to the not-so-improbable events vividly dramatized in The 6th Day, a sci-fi thriller that returns Arnold Schwarzenegger to the genre that made him a box-office monster. The film is set in a near-future America, where shopping malls have stores that clone dead pets and where human cloning -- while possible -- remains outlawed. That doesn’t stop ruthless tycoon Tony Goldwyn Ghost and rogue scientist Robert Duvall, who develop a black market in people regenerated from traces of DNA material. Arnold portrays a helicopter pilot caught up in Goldwyn’s schemes and targeted for death while a clone assumes his identity. The 6th Day offers Arnold’s fans plenty of action, albeit of a less lethal variety than found in some of his previous vehicles, while raising some interesting questions about the morality of cloning-on-demand. Director Roger Spottiswoode Tomorrow Never Dies doesn't let the big questions bog down the narrative, though, as he maintains a driving pace straight through to the closing credits. He also surrounds the histrionically challenged Schwarzenegger with terrific actors like Goldwyn, who’s a positively reptilian villain, and Duvall, whose recently widowed scientist, haunted by his conscience, strikes a poignant note. Exciting, suspenseful, and dare we say intellectually provocative, The 6th Day is a must-have item for Arnold’s admirers and sci-fi fans alike. The DVD includes a phony infomercial for the film’s pet-cloning company, RePet, along with an audio commentary by music composer Trevor Rabin, an isolated music score, talent files, production notes, and theatrical trailers.
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert
The 6th Day is not in the same league with the great Schwarzenegger films such as Total Recall and Terminator 2, but it's a well-crafted entertainment containing enough ideas to qualify it as science fiction and not just as a futurist thriller.

    Arnold Schwarzennegger is Back!

He's back! This time Arnold is taking on the topic of cloning. In The Sixth Day fans will get a double dose of their favorite action hero as this film speculates on a worst-case scenario about human cloning. Three years ago, the action star underwent heart surgery and took a year off from his busy film schedule to regain his health. This film definitely marks his triumphant return to his trademark kind of action film. Fans will not be disappointed.
