Overview

The first 22 episodes of The Addams Family are present on the triple-DVD set, looking and sounding better than they ever have in syndicated reruns -- the full-screen black-and-white image (1.33-to-1) is so beautifully transferred, than you can see every delightfully bizarre detail of the decor in the Addams home. And each disc opens automatically to a simple, easy-to-use menu that also includes easy access to the bonus features -- the latter include a karaoke version of the theme song, a delightful featurette called "You Rang, Mr. Addams," and audio commentary on four episodes (including the series debut) by surviving cast members Ken Weatherwax, Lisa Loring, and Felix Silla (who played Cousin Itt) -- their discussion ranges freely across the history of the series, and their reminiscences are so engaging and beguiling, that they're as enjoyable as the show itself. Weatherwax and Loring, who portrayed Pugsley and Wednesday, respectively, literally grew up while doing the show, Loring first learning to read while working with their early scripts, and they had a wonderful time doing the show. As with other FoxVideo television series DVDs, the episodes are generously chapter-coded and the discs are well-produced. The only thing missing, which one hopes might happen in a future release on the series, is a contribution from surviving star John Astin, who portrayed Gomez.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
Creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky, and altogether ooky, The Addams Family television series that debuted on ABC in 1964 was inspired by the amusingly macabre New Yorker cartoons of Charles Addams. Addams's humorous, warped idea of a typical American family featured a weirdly twisted bunch of characters. The TV show introduced the wonderful John Astin as Gomez, a lawyer, philanthropist, and father with a childlike sense of wonder at everything around him; his wife, Morticia (Carolyn Jones), a raven-haired and slinkily dressed matriarch who sends her husband into romantic paroxysms with an occasional French bon mot; daughter Wednesday (Lisa Loring), a sweet, happy child with giant pet spiders (contrary to Christina Ricci's portrayal of a depressed and sullen Wednesday in the feature film); son Pugsley (Ken Weatherwax), a genius inventor who is constantly building things; Morticia's uncle Fester (Jackie Coogan), a strange, bald-headed man with a penchant for putting light bulbs in his mouth -- and lighting them; Gomez's mother, Grandmama (Blossom Rock), a talented potion maker with frizzy hair and the ability to ride a broom (but she's not a witch); family butler Lurch (Ted Cassidy), a giant, harpsichord-playing stone face and Wednesday's best friend; Thing, the disembodied hand that has been Gomez's best friend since he was a child; and the chattering Cousin Itt, a relation of Gomez's who's completely covered in hair, with the exception of his bowler hat. The series only lasted two seasons, but subsequent re-airings in syndication later gave the show a cult status potent enough to spawn two feature films, two animated series, numerous video games, and a direct-to-video film. Along with the first 22 (of 34) black-and-white half-hour episodes of Season 1, this set also includes three featurettes, theme song karaoke, commentary on three episodes, and more.
