Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
From the creators of The Brave Little Toaster comes this enchanting, stylized animated fantasy. The story finds beloved fairy-tale characters Thumbelina and Tom Thumb reunited after being uprooted as infants from their magical forest kingdom by the ringmaster of a "Carnival of Curiosity." Our diminutive heroes are kindred spirits searching for "some place I belong." But the bumpy road to happily-ever-after is fraught with comical villains, treacherous perils, exciting escapes, and nick-of-time rescues. The stellar voice cast includes Jennifer Love Hewitt as the self-reliant Thumbelina, Elijah Wood as brave, goodhearted Tom Thumb, and Peter Gallagher as the Mole King, who is determined to make Thumbelina his queen. Among the menagerie of scene-stealing supporting characters are hench-mole Godfrey Jon Stewart and petulant Margaret Beetle Frasier's Jane Leeves. Bebe Neuwirth voices Thumbelina's mother, with Robert Guillaume as Ben, Tom's adoptive guardian. William Finn the Tony-winning composer of Falsettos contributed the songs, of which the Mole King's "Welcome to My Hole" is a showstopper. This magical and musical story is perfect for the entire family.
All Movie Guide
It's not Shrek, but Disney's direct-to-video animated musical Adventures of Tom Thumb and Thumbelina provides pleasant enough entertainment to amuse the preschooler and elementary crowd. There are a few thrills and chills, but nothing to diminish a very G rating. The traditional animation isn't as lush as other Disney offerings, but it moves along at a brisk clip, with six original songs and a superb all-star voice cast that includes Jennifer Love Hewitt, Elijah Wood, Peter Gallagher, Robert Guillaume, Bebe Neuwirth, and Jon Stewart, not that it matters to the target audience. Gallagher's song "Welcome to My Hole" is a comic highlight. Besides the names and sizes of the lead characters, this original film has nothing to do with the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson fables.

    How CUTE is this movie!!!!

This movie was so adorable. There was adventure, romance, comedy (a little) all rolled in to one movie. Tom Thumb risks his life to save Thumbelina from marrying the evil mole king. I liked this Thumbelina better than the oringal Thumbelina.

    I loved it!

I rented this movie with a child I was babysitting and fell in love with it. The songs are so adorably sung and are meant to sound that way because it is a CHILDREN'S movie! These singers are not professional and do not intend to be. It is perfect for young children and very easy to follow. It sends out a good message that I belive children can grasp and follow themselves. Very well done!

    Wow...what a bad movie

This movie fails at everything it attempts to achieve. I watched Tom Thumb and Thumbelina after reading several bad reviews. I am very happy to say that it lived up to each and every terrible review. The songs (specifically: one, two cha cha cha) are very poor. And Disney should learn that 3 songs does not make a movie a musical. Secondly the plot is boring, confusing, uneventful, and full of holes. The characters themselves are lifeless. Also, someone should tell Disney that children do not understand Richard III references. The animation is also really awful. At times it becomes blurry and does not result in the creation of distance which it attempts to create. Basically the animation leaves you dizzy and straining to see the picture. In addition, the characters are badly drawn and the animals are completely pathetic.I pity Elijah Wood, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and the others involved in the creation of this movie nothing could have saved it. The only positive aspect of this movie is that it is so bad you can laugh at it. So for all you college students, adults, and teenagers looking for a good laugh...this is your movie. By the way you can sing along with One, Two, Cha, Cha, Cha after movie. But there's no commentary on the DVD..hmmm... I wonder why?

You have to watch it more than once......

Well I must agree with the person who wrote a review and gave this movie one star - it was horrible the first time I watched it with my daughter, however the copy we bought was skipping and stuff - I went back, bought another copy and watched it with my daughter again - it is a really good movie - no academy award winner, but it is good. Althought there is not a lot of songs - the songs it does have are very addictive. I especially like ''Welcome to my Hole'' sung by Peter Gallagher. As for the Richard III reference, well I mean what cartoons do not have adult haa haas - look at Bugs Bunny and Loony Toons, pretty much any Disney movie, even Tiny Toons. Anyway - all in all it actually is a pretty good little movie.
