Sporting solid colors and well saturated black levels, the image quality on this disc is excellent save for a few minor instances of edge enhancement. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English and is very well produced. This mix utilizes a vast array of surround sounds during the film, making sure that both the front and rear speakers are given a nice workout. All aspects of the dialogue, effects, and music are free and clear of any distortion or hiss. Also included on this disc are English, French, and Spanish subtitles. There are a good number of extra features on this DVD, starting off with commentary track by director Charles Shyer. Shyer is a funny and literate man who has a lot to say about the production and release of the film. Next up is a 15-minute behind-the-scenes documentary which features interviews with many of the cast and crew members. "Designing Affair" is a 15-minute piece which focuses on costume designer Milena Canonero and her work on the fashions of the film. Five additional scenes are included with optional director's commentary, though overall they wouldn't have added much to the final film. Finally there is a short gag reel of outtakes from the film, a theatrical trailer for the film, and some information on the cast and crew.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Oscar-winner Hilary Swank, typically seen in films with contemporary settings, is surprisingly effective as an alluring seductress in this opulent period piece. She plays Jeanne de Valois, an 18th-century Frenchwoman who, orphaned and robbed of her birthright while a young girl, single-mindedly schemes to regain possession of her old home and restore luster to her family's tarnished name. A marriage of convenience gives her access to France's elite, and Valois goes to work, convincing politically ambitious Cardinal Louis de Rohan played by Jonathan Pryce as congenially corrupt to present the queen, Marie Antoinette an appropriately imperious Joely Richardson, with a fabulously ornate diamond necklace. Acting as a go-between, Jeanne appropriates the necklace and unwittingly sets off a chain of events that culminates in nothing less than -- the French Revolution! Although director Charles Shyer is best known for frothy modern-day comedies such as Father of the Bride, he proves remarkably adept with the conventions of costume drama. His handling of a talented cast reflects this, too: Pryce, for example, appears to best advantage as the venal Cardinal; Simon Baker has just the right look and attitude for Jeanne's gallant lover; and the always-welcome Christopher Walken fits the role of self-described sorcerer Cagliostro like a smartly tailored glove. Lavishly appointed and cleverly written, Affair of the Necklace will prove pleasing to eyes and ears alike. The DVD includes two documentaries, "Making of a Scandal" and "Designing Affair," along with a feature-length commentary by Shyer, additional scenes, bloopers, cast-production team highlights, and theatrical trailer.
Los Angeles Times
The Affair of the Necklace is no paperback romance or swashbuckler it at first appears to be, but rather the remarkable odyssey of a young woman who lived to tell her amazing story herself. Kevin Thomas

    An Incredible Movie

I chose this movie because I thought Hillary Swank was superb in Million Dollar Baby. Now I know what an incredible actor she really is. The costuming was very well done and all of the actors were wonderful. I had rented this DVD and now I am going to buy it because it is one of the few movies that I will want to see time and again.

    TWO THUMBS UP

As a lover of history I must say this is a great movie. It shows how corrupt French society was and how the Court lived. It showed how evil they could be and it gave a wonderul portrayal of the affair of the necklace scandal. It is a great movie...Joley Richardson is great as Marie-Antoinette....A MUST SEE

    Pathetic

I fail to see the point of this movie. I had no emotional connection with any of the characters whatsoever. This is by far one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
