This Sci-Fi TV pilot is both witty and entertaining. Everytime you watch it you see something you missed the last time around. It's too bad it didn't work out for the Sci-Fi channel, but then there's always the chance of a direct to DVD feature. Although it's animated it is definately meant for adults.
How should one categorize this cartoon pilot? Well... it's sort of a Absurdist/Surrealist, Historical, Science-fiction, Steam-Punk, Conspiracy, Action-Comedy, of that particularly magical "Mike Mignola" brand. If you don't know who Mike Mignola is, just know that he's the guy who invented the "Hellboy" comics, so that should give you an idea of where this is coming from. "Screw-on Head" (Voiced by Paul Giamatti) is kind of a Robot/Super hero under the employ of one President Abraham Lincoln. (If you're not already intrigued then this may not be for you), and is called upon to save the United States (and the world) from occult, and otherwise super natural forces. His primary antagonist in this pilot episode (and sadly the ONLY episode) is his former Man-servant turned "Emperor Zombie" who wants to conquer the world (he also has a habit of killing all Screw-on Heads subsequent Man servants, making their rivalry very personal). Emperor Zombie pretty much steals the show as he is brilliantly voiced by David Hyde-Pierce. It should also be noted that Molly Shannon offers a humorous performance as Screw-on Head's former-true-love-turned-vampire, Patience. Other than the fact that it's hilariously funny, Another thing that this show has going for it is the animation. First because it is rendered in the Style of Mike Mignola's intriguing, signature art, and second because it's just... really well animated. They also don't skip out on the action sequences; wherein all the blows and motions are rendered with appropriately satisfying "oomf". Really, the biggest complaint I can level at it is that it wasn't picked up as a regular series. So if you want a humorously entertaining little 22-minute romp, complete with Robots, Zombies, Werewolves, Vampires, Demigods, monkeys, stuffed dogs, and Abraham Lincoln; it's really hard to go wrong with this DVD.
