Like many movies made in the late 70's, the special effects aren't all that great. That being stated, it gives way to your own imagination of what lurks behind the corner. It's not seeing the monsters that really scares; it's not really knowing ....
The plot gets a little watery in places and leaves the viewer still guessing at the end of it all. I would recommend it for anyone who is more about the suspense of a movie than the special effects.

The fact that this is a true story makes it much more cooler and scarier.

Growing up near Amityville LI in the 70's, this movie really interesting for me. I even visited the house at 112 Ocean Ave, now 110 Ocean I believe. ( They changed the address and changed the cool windows on the top floor.) I visited there on Halloween 1980 and there were hundreds of kids and cops everywhere. Big attraction on Halloween. My grandparents lived down the road and said that in the early 70s it was already a noticable house having been painted black at the time. The ronnie DeFao murders in that house are actually true and you can look online at NY Newsday Nov. 13, 1974 and see the original articles.

Well done and entertaining, although fictitious, account of demonic haunting! Enjoyed the subtle but deep-down chills and the foreboding atmosphere of this movie. Really enjoyed the all-out scares, like the glowing eyes outside of the second-story window and the loud, disembodied voice. The goo was a bit too much, though. Highly recommend to horror buffs.

''The Amityville Horror'' will and alway's will remain as a horror classic for years to come. As soon as the Lutz family moves into 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, NY, they were all aware of the murders that happened in their house the year before - but they weren't aware that thier house was haunted.
