Overview

It's always a treat to see a smaller film receive the special edition treatment, which is exactly what Universal has done for Robert Duvall's powerful film The Apostle. The image, which is framed at the aspect ratio of 1.85:1, is presented nicely, with strong colors and solid blacks. There are signs of shimmering which might have been reduced if an anamorphic transfer had been used, but sadly, that is not the case. Still, the image is rather strong and not a disappointment. As for the sound, there is a Dolby Digital surround track that is primarily centered up front, and rarely uses any of the outer speakers, though for a film like this, it is hardly a surprise. As for the supplements for this "collector's edition," they are not abundant, but that is made up in the overall quality of what is presented. The main point of interest is a commentary track from director/writer/star Robert Duvall. This is one of the better commentaries out there as Duvall's love of filmmaking, acting, and the subject matter is evident. There are no gaps as he keeps pace with the film and offers plenty of valuable information on making this personal film. A real plus is a 27-minute documentary on making the film, including interviews with the main cast and crew members. While some of the information is repeated in the commentary, it is still a fascinating look at this production. Finally, this disc contains a nice soundtrack presentation consisting of an interview with the charming Christian singer Steven Curtis Chapman and his video for "I Will Not Go Quietly," plus the theatrical trailer and the usual array of production notes and cast biographies.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Jason Ankeny
To its credit, Robert Duvall's The Apostle never lapses into the stereotypes common to films like Elmer Gantry, which portray preachers of questionable moral fibre as hypocrites and charlatans; of the many questions which swirl about Sonny, the utter conviction of his religious beliefs is never open to debate. His belief in salvation is total, and his love for his flock is pure; furthermore, his followers -- the majority of them African-American, further blurring common cinematic stereotypes -- are never criticized or made to seem foolish for placing their faith in him. While Duvall's storytelling skills are uneven, his gifts for establishing mise-en-scene are superbly realized; equally strong is his direction of his cast, a fascinatingly organic blend of professional and non-professional actors. The result of some 15 years of behind-the-scenes struggle, The Apostle is an important work from one of Hollywood's most important figures.

If you are into character development and local color - not to mention high intensity, realistic emotion - you will like this movie. Also if you are curious to know what a ''real Christian'' is ''really'' about - you know not the fake stuff so many who profess the faith put forward - this is an indepth portrayal of a genuine Christian as he hits hard times. One of the very few movies that has brought a tear to my eye. Highly recommend watching and buying.

This movie is a revelation of how so many religious leaders follow their own rules and justify it all in the name of their religion. Well-written, good music, and easy to follow. I saw it three times at the theater and bought the soundtrack.

I myself ain't never ben to keen on religion but i have always had a lot of faith. when I first saw this movie, I actually did not care for it. Howeva, as I caught repeated viewin's, I found myself gettin' a converted by simply watching Robert Duvall's performance, which should hav won the dang Oscar. There ain't nuthin' bad bout this here film. Watch it. Period.
