The Ballet Workout

My favorite workout!

This is a wonderful classical ballet workout, with piano like you would hear in the studio. Both the beginner and intermediate levels include floor stretches, barre work, then center work (without barre). This is not an aerobic workout, but it is a fabulous way to work both strength and flexibility. With ballet you are going to use all your muscles, including ones you didn't know you had. If you've had no or little ballet exposure, it will take a little time to learn the routines but once you do it pays off. During the exercises, the instructor provides many useful tips on form that will help you get a better workout, and are especially helpful to someone who hasn't had prior training. I think the workout is timeless, and a great find for someone who enjoys the structure of classic ballet instruction. I wish the title was available on DVD!

My Personal opinion of The Ballet Workout

Melissa Lowe is a great instructor that will help you shape and tone your entire body. I have little ballet experience, but I enjoy it anyway. I really enjoy the center work that includes jumping and balancing exercises. I like the way you go from balancing to large jumps. All who want to get in shape should try it. Also, it is now available on DVD.

Great supplement to dance class

I added this workout to my collection to help me "practice" in between dance lessons (beginning adult). It is a traditional, classical workout and very similar to a regular class at the studio. In just 2 weeks, I've noticed improvement in my form, flexibility, and balance. The piano is relaxing and Ms. Lowe is an excellent instructor with beautiful form. Now, I will say that this DVD was dubbed from an old VHS and it looks and sounds that way on screen, but that aside, it is a wonderful DVD.

There are two workouts on the DVD with the second being a little more advanced. They both begin with floor stretches, move to the barre, and end with centre work. The workouts in Ballet Workout II are similar, but a little more challenging and have the pianist right in the studio! I also have the New York City Ballet workouts and both are excellent resources, but this one is a little more low-key, traditional, and basic for beginners. If you are looking for a more classical, low-impact workout that will still trim and tone commensurate with your efforts, consider this one!
