Easy Reader. “Silent E.” Love of Chair. Jennifer of the Jungle and her ape, Paul. Letterman. If you are a child of the ‘70s, these words will give you a nostalgic shiver of delight. But more than three decades later, The Electric Company still has the power to engage budding readers. Brightening the DVD landscape, this four-disc set contains 20 episodes from the Emmy Award-winning series’ 1971-77 run. The Electric Company’s target audience was aged six to ten, but its unflaggingly paced variety show format of songs, sketches, vignettes, and animation was more akin to Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In and The Carol Burnett Show than to Sesame Street, making it something of a guilty pleasure for even high schoolers. The high-wattage cast includes Rita Moreno (who contributes onscreen introductions for each episode), Bill Cosby, and future Oscar winner Morgan Freeman. The animated “Letterman” segments feature Joan Rivers as the narrator and Gene Wilder as Letterman (“Able to leap capital “t” in a single bound”) and Zero Mostel as his letter-swiping nemesis, Spell Binder. There are also cameo contributions by such TV icons as Rowan & Martin and, fresh from the Ponderosa, Lorne Greene and Michael Landon. Tom Lehrer contributed songs such as “Silent E” (featured in Episode #386 on Disc 3) that became generational touchstones. But it’s not just the star power that keeps The Electric Company beacon shining today: It’s the infectious spirit of the age-appropriate wordplay and brilliant bits of business designed to reinforce basic literacy concepts. As Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius author Dave Eggers notes in his contribution to the illuminating 24-page booklet that accompanies this box set, one gets the sense that “the show would have been pretty fun to put together.” Even better, The Electric Company is that rare series that may inspire viewers to pick up a book instead of the TV remote.
The Onion A.V. Club
It's rare for a beloved childhood show to live up to its memories, but The Electric Company does better. In reruns through the mid-'80s, it made reading fun for kids. These days, it makes thinking about creative teaching fun for adults. Keith Phipps

    Fun nostalgia

As I grow older I become more and more nostalgic for things from my childhood. With the passing of time and seeing the world change in ways I could never imagine as a child (not always for the good) it is nice to be able to escape the reality of today and go back thirty plus years and get a taste of much simpler times. While watching these episodes I can almost feel as if I'm in the second grade and getting to watch TV in the classroom once again. What a great feeling.

The Best of Hey You Guys!!!

I used to love running home to watch this show, after school, everyday. Even though my daughter is not even 2 yet, she now also loves this show. She's even learned to say words already that we normally wouldn't think she would know yet. The cast is great - Morgan Freeman, Bill Cosby, Rita Moreno. Voice work from Gene Wilder, Joan Rivers and Mel Brooks. And famous charcters like Spider-Man and Road Runner. This is a delight for all ages and a great learning tool as well.

    Incredible Box Set

This box set is a wonderful learning tool for young children and a trip down memory lane for adults. This is the perfect holiday gift for children and parents alike. Parents can relive their childhoods while giving their children the tools they need to be successful in life. I would highly recommend this set to parents with young children as well as anyone who grew up on the show.

    Loved it!

I remember watching Electric Co as a kid and have amazing recall of so many of the characters and skits. A great trip down nostalgia lane and such a fun time. Buying another copy for my brother!

    PROBLEM SOLVED!

I was surpised as well at the inappropriate trailer issue, so I called Shout Factory. They had already realized the error and immediately sent me a replacement disc (basically, the same disc without the offensive previews). Now that my favorite show is clear of this garbage, I couldn't be happier to share my favorite show with my family. One of the smartest shows in the history of TV!

Learning made fun, all over again!!!

My son 7, and daughter 9 are enjoying Elec. Co. so much. I don't even know if they realize they are learning! I think they enjoy it, because some of what the actors say, is unexpected from adults. In this day and age, this still captures their imagination and holds their attention. A+

Amazing! (What is the other review talking about?)

I own this DVD set and it's incredible - it gives this amazing show the "treatment" it truly deserves and has all of the segments I remeber from when I was a kid. Not sure what the other reviewer is talking about re: the previews. I just saw trailers for Sesame Street and Bill Cosby. Maybe they bought an defective DVD?

Warning to Parents of Young Children

Unfortunately, I didn't get past the first 10 minutes of the collection with my preschool age son because the movie previews were absolutely INAPPROPRIATE, and you cannot forward past them! I'm talking dialog about sex, condoms, drugs, etc. I was not expecting that at the beginning of a video endorsed by sesamestreet.org. I will be returning tomorrow. So disappointed.
