Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
It is to Bill Cosby's inestimable credit that the DVD release of The Bill Cosby Show stirs more than fond memories of TV shows past. Nearly 30 years later, it's still a class act; Cosby's recurring themes -- the importance of education, self-respect, and pride -- are timeless. The Bill Cosby Show was a tailor-made vehicle for its star, following his Emmy-winning stint on I Spy and introduced each week by "Hikky Burr," an infectiously funky vamp co-written by Cosby and Quincy Jones. Cosby stars as Chet Kincaid, a high school teacher and athletics coach who invariably becomes involved in the problems of others. By his own estimation, he handles each personal crisis "superbly." Years before revitalizing the sitcom with The Cosby Show, this series challenged the format. At Cosby's insistence, there was no laugh track: a hard-fought victory that, he claims in an interview included in this collection, led NBC to cancel the series after only two years, despite high ratings. As with Cosby's stand-up comedy act, race was not on the agenda. When prejudice does rear its head, in the episode "The Best Hook Shot in the World," Chet is the guilty party, as he assumes that a short student will never make the basketball team. In "The Elevator Doesn't Stop Here Anymore," he finds himself trapped in an elevator with a Caucasian fellow teacher guest star Henry Fonda and a cleaning woman Elsa Lanchester with a foreign accent. All in the Family would later use a similar scenario to loudly address racism and stereotypes, but here, Chet and the teacher simply play "20 Questions" and discuss their lives and dreams. On the other hand, some memorable episodes featured veteran black actors marginalized by Hollywood. Mantan Moreland Buckingham Brown in the Charlie Chan films and "Moms" Mabley are hilarious as Chet's bickering relatives in "Lover's Quarrel." Rex Ingram The Thief of Bagdad gives a moving performance as a proud, down-on-his-luck man whom Chet helps gets a job as a department store Santa in "A Christmas Ballad." Some episodes are just for laughs. In "A Word from Our Sponsor," Chet auditions for a TV commercial that's Gavin McLeod as his increasingly impatient director. In "Let X Equal a Lousy Weekend," Chet is stumped by a problem when he substitutes for an algebra teacher. But the show is at its best when Chet teaches his students to do the right thing, as in "This Mouth is Rated X," in which he compels his basketball team to stop using profanity cleverly bleep-bleeped on the soundtrack. When Chet states at one point, "Somebody's got to teach the youth of America," it’s clear that Cosby is in a class by himself.
