Overview

The inept Ensign Garland (Robert Morse) battles a trio of jewel thieves in this Walt Disney comedy. Garland starts by spilling paint on the lovely Kate Fairchild (Stephanie Powers). Harry (Phil Silvers), Max (Norman Fell) and Charlie (Mickey Shaughnessy) try to recover the jewels accidentally dumped by Garland into a picnic basket. Garland's superior is Commander Taylor (Don Ameche), who hounds the harried ensign for being a constant bumbler. Jason Bennett (Wally Cox) is the playboy who has replaced his yacht engine with a wine cellar. Character actors Joe E. Ross and Al Lewis witness the sight gags and react to the seafaring shenanigans.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Nautical nonsense ensues when Coast Guard ensign Thomas Garland (Robert Morse), a luckless but well-meaning dork who lives in the wake of his war hero father, takes over his first marina command. TV regular Stefanie Powers is along for the ride, between gigs as The Girl from U.N.C.L.E. and half of the Hart to Hart duo. Here, as an independent single mom who also happens to be a skilled boating instructor, she’s the perfect Disney love interest for the bungling hero and bails Garland out of his many mishaps. The titular play on “beatniks” was dated in 1970, but time has dulled the painful pun’s sting: The reasons to jump into Boatniks are varied and, for the most part, unsophisticated. As in other Disney live-action comedies of the period, slapstick keeps Boatniks afloat, and a raft of character actors and comedians keep the gags coming. Foremost among these are: Phil Silvers, Norman Fell, and Mickey Shaughnessy as a bungling crew of jewel thieves; Wally Cox as a seafaring playboy; and Don Ameche as Garland's flustered commander. On board as something of a Greek chorus are Joe E. Ross and Al “Grampa” Lewis. While suitable for the whole family, this G-rated comedy does not have a lot of kid appeal. But it will float the boats of older baby boomers looking for old-fashioned slapstick comedy.

My mother introduced this film to us kids nearly 20 years ago when she saw it on the Disney Channel. The evening she had us watch it, my sisters and I were laughing so hard. Naturally we recorded it on VHS. For the last 8 years I have searched this Disney Comedy with an all star comedy cast without much luck. The search paid off! When I received it, I placed it in the player, my childhood memories of this film returned. I laughed, chuckled, giggled, and rolled my eyes at the antics of Ensign Garland of the US Coast Guard. You will get a feel for the era it was filmed. It was a time of being carefree and enjoying life. As with all Disney films, the bad guys lose and the guy wins the girl. If you have never watched this before, do so and for about 90 minutes re-enter your childhood. If you have seen this before, share it with your friends and children. Make this film a household comedy classic that is for the entire family.
