Overview

Feeling that they are doing God's will, two Catholic men from Boston set out to kill everyone in this Reservoir Dogs-style vigilante thriller. Brothers Conner and Murphy MacManus (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus) take to performing their divine duty against the Russian mob. They massacre a bunch of unsuspecting Mafioso in a scene of absurd violence, then they let more blood in a mass killing of porn-shop customers. Instead of getting thrown in jail, they are dubbed "saints" by the Boston Herald, and they are praised by brilliant, tortured, and gay FBI agent Paul Smecker (Willem Dafoe).

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Greg Fagan
A wonderful direct-to-video hit, Boondock Saints delivers a wild and visceral experience in the form of a mythical modern tale of vigilante justice. The film begins unassumingly with two brothers, Sean Patrick Flannery and Norman Reedus, hanging out with their buddies at their favorite South Boston bar. When Russian mobsters show up looking for money, the affable pair defend their turf, eventually with extreme prejudice. This sets in motion a series of events that seem more calculated for startling cinematic effect than anything else, and it all pays off brilliantly. Flannery and Reedus, curiously devout Catholic boys, make a most unlikely pair of psychopathic assassins, and their elevation to sainthood by the locals makes sense only within the zany confines of a movie. However, the most gleeful departures from reality are reserved for Willem Dafoe, portraying the tortured FBI genius who is tracking the boys' escalating murder spree. Dafoe plays Agent Paul Smecker as a flamboyant and self-loathing homosexual: He arrives at a crime scene where the lads have slain at least a dozen thugs, slips on his headphones, turns up an opera, and exuberantly re-creates the action as if he had been there. To call the performance over the top would be an understatement. Is Smecker appalled by the atrocities? Oh yes. Does he approve of the vigilantes' actions? Maybe. But one does not get the feeling that rookie director Troy Duffy is trying to make any sort of social statement here, or that anything in the film should be taken seriously. This is pure entertainment for people who aren't afraid of a little blood -- and are also eager to see a toilet bowl employed as a murder weapon.

What's the draw of this cinematic trainwreck? Beats me.

The dialogue is tight and well played by Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus as brothers. And I have never seen Willem Dafoe better. And I really like Willem Dafoe. This is one of the only movies that I've seen that makes continual flashbacks work. You get to see the lead up and then you see the aftermath. Dafoe's FBI agent tries to fill in the pieces, not always well, and then comes the flashback showing exactly what did happen. It's a shame that the writer/director ended up landing himself on every blacklist there is in Hollywood. (For more detail, watch "Overnight", a documentary on Troy Duffy and his making of "The Boondock Saints." The guy's a conceited moron.) If you like this movie, and from what I understand you'll either love it or hate it, make sure to watch the deleted scene "Call from Ma." You'll laugh your a#$ off!

This movie was recommended to me when I was younger, by a bunch of friends I played video games with. They named themselves after each character in the movie, so naturally I had to watch it, right? It is by far one of the BEST movies I've ever seen, especially considering it's B movie status. The characters were rich and diverse, the plot was well detailed, but unless you pay close attention, can throw you for a loop towards the end, and the soundtrack for the movie was perfect. That's why I gave this movie a 5, and I recommend it to anyone that likes a good action/comedy movie.

I have always loved this movie, but I only have the sequel in my movie collection. So when I seen this cool artsy version of the first on Blu-ray, I purchased it. However, they art shown in the photo for this movie is not at all how it looks. It just has the normal cover art for original Blu-ray version. This made me upset especially since I paid more hoping to get the version with the better art. I guess it is possible for it to be inside the movie case, but I do not want to open it to find out. I am not sure if this is a mistake or if the black, grey, and white art only exists digitally.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! This is one of my favorite movies. The idea than any one can just go around killing people is a little scary however, you can't help but cheer on the brothers in what they are doing. They are getting rid of all the 'bad' people in the world. THis is a hilarous, and thought provoking movie. I love it!!

Overtime, the vast majority of movies tend to entertain the masses, and leave us with lasting memories and impressions. The Boondock Saints, however, is one movie that goes beyond the call of duty. This movie has all the criteria any good movie needs, and moreover, it excels in them. Most viewers can agree that all good movies incorporate elements of humor, suspense, action, and drama. The Boondock Saints has all of these and more. Every time I watch this movie, I still receive an internal feeling of delight before, during, and after play...and I have seen the movie coming up on 32 times! The Boondock Saints will slowly grow on you, to where you will understand why there are so many more personal obsession web sites dedicated to this movie, over any other. This movie deserves to be re-released via box office in the United States, and this would allow for everyone to be informed that this movie even exists. With most movies, popular belief would ensue that if you hadn’t heard of it, then it probably isn’t any good; fortunately, The Boondock Saints breaks the mold and surprises almost every viewer. In fact, I have yet to meet anyone that would not absolutely rate this movie as one of their favorites. A personal trait that I carry is that I love being awestruck. This is one movie that can actually induce euphoric feelings during the intense fight scenes or even at any point when parts of the plot come together. The non-chronological order or events slowy piece together to form a picture that ultimately affects the entire world. The key to this is the excellent cinematography Troy Duffy calls for. Duffy also allows for grown men to connect with their inner child, because the entire concept of the movie is based on an untraditional “superhero” theme. And is this not the point of movies? To escape from real life and enjoy delusions of grandeur via the big screen is what this movie is all about. Ultimately, I would recommend this movie to anyone who has eyes. Oddly enough, I also recommend to anyone who sees it to watch it at least two times. One can easily appreciate the movie after watching it once, but to understand the full incredibility of this work of art, perhaps a second viewing may be in order. If you are anyone who loves to be sitting on the edge of your seat, or anyone that loves to laugh incessantly, or even someone who attempts to figure out movies before they are over, then The Boondock Saints will surely not disappoint. Like I said, this movie keeps bringing me excitement and pleasure, even after watching it over 30 times.

I had to write this after I read the review prior to this one... first of all if you do not appreciate this movie then you need to watch it again and this time stay awake. If you have any taste at all you will be quoting this movie into the grave. I write movies hoping to make them as good as this. Dafoe is phenomenal! Plot and storyline are amazing, it is captivating and incredibly witty not to mention hilarious! And best of all it makes you think and question your own morals... it provokes thought... something 90% of movies cease to do anymore. A must see if you have any movie taste.

Before I watched this movie, Gladiator was my all time favorite. Now it is Boondock Saints. This movie packs a tremendous punch led by great acting by Willem Defoe, Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus. Not only does this movie have awsome action sequences, but many very funny scenes. I would recommend this movie to anyone that- well, to anyone. This is one of the greatest movies ever. It could have done really well in the box office if it wasn't an independant film.

Keep you on the edge of your seat awesomeness! The structure of the movie is a little wierd at first due to the fact it does the ending of the fight then shows the battle, but its still a great movie. It is a movie that not many people have seen, but eveyone who sees it loves it.

I watched this at my friends house and instantly fell in love. I finally found a copy of it at FYE. I have watched that movie repeatedly. I personally like the director's style and ease of movement from the present to a flashback. Those who don't follow the story line closely probably won't appreciate the story and plot of this movie. For the rest of us this is a keeper!

When i picked up Boondock Saints, i was hoping for something that was as cool and as slick as Pulp Fiction, yet original on its own. What i got was a replica of Pulp Fiction. However, Boondock Saints is not nearly as good. I thought it started off good with the two men fighting in a bar fight and then finishing it off at their place, but after that things went downhill. The final straw for me was when Willem Defoe dressed up like a woman to infiltrate the mob. IT WAS SO STUPID! If you want to watch this movie, i suggest you watch the first 30 minutes, then shut it off, otherwise the rest of the movie will ruin your view on it.

I have never written a movie review until now. The first time I saw this movie I was instantly hooked. The plot is great. Lots of action. It has one of the most amazing quotes out of any movie I have ever heard, rivaling Pulp Fiction. It goes : ''And shepherds we shall be, for thee my Lord for thee, Power hath descended forth from thy hand, that our feet may swiftly carry out thy command, we shall flow a river forth to thee, and teeming with souls shall it ever be. In nomine patrie, et fili et spiritu sancti.'' This movie is great. If you have never seen it definatly buy it or rent it.

I first saw this movie in 2000 - rented it from Blockbuster and had never heard of it before. I like it so much I bought all 6 copies that Blockbuster had, and gave them to friends as Christmas presents. Everyone loved the movie and now that they have DVD players, have bought it on DVD. It's a shame Duffy didn't put out the sound track to this movie because the music is diverse and excellent. Willem Defoe is so good in this movie and the rest of the cast too. I hope that Duffy will continue to make movies - I am an instant fan!
