Overview

Two men who have made a career out of spinning remarkable stories find themselves bringing them to life in this inventive fantasy inspired by the creators of some of the world's best-loved fairy tales. Will Grimm Matt Damon and his brother Jake Grimm Heath Ledger earn their living by traveling from village to village and vanquishing strange supernatural beasts that have been menacing the populace. Or at least that's what their clients think has been happening; as it happens, Will and Jake are confidence men who cleverly stage the ghostly attacks and then take payment for making the creatures they fabricated go away. One day, the brothers arrive in a town and offer to help its people drive away evil spirits, unaware that the community is bordered by a genuine enchanted forest, and that young girls in the village have been disappearing at a frightful rate. The Grimm Brothers must now learn how to deal with real magic, with the help of the lovely but fearless Angelika Lena Headey. Directed by Terry Gilliam, The Brothers Grimm also stars Monica Bellucci, Peter Stormare, and Jonathan Pryce.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
From the fecund imagination of filmmaker Terry Gilliam, former Monty Python trouper and one of the screen’s most accomplished fabulists, comes this visually dynamic if not altogether compelling story of the subversive siblings whose fairy tales have alternately delighted and unsettled children for over two centuries. According to Gilliam, brothers Wilhelm Matt Damon and Jacob Heath Ledger Grimm initially galumphed around Europe pretending to be 18th-century Ghostbusters, using stagecraft and psychology to fool ignorant peasants into believing they had cleansed villages of malevolent spirits. Running afoul of Delatombe Jonathan Pryce, Napoleon’s top man in Germany, they are forced under threat of death to work their magic in a haunted forest into which nearby children have ventured and vanished. Aided by a local forester Lena Headey, the brothers find themselves confronted by a genuine, centuries-old witch Monica Bellucci who needs the children for a spell that will make her young and beautiful again. The plot is good enough as a peg on which to hang elaborate visual effects, and these are quite striking indeed. But Gilliam never quite decides whether he's making a comedy or an effects-driven thriller. Sequences that make their dramatic point early on are allowed to drag out needlessly, and some of the actors -- especially Peter Stormare, playing Delatombe’s lackey -- behave as though they’ve drifted over from another movie altogether, reading lines in an entirely different emotional register than others in the same scene. Nevertheless, The Brothers Grimm offers a great deal of enjoyment for those who dote on eye candy, and it's hard to truly fault Gilliam for having too many good ideas -- even when they get in the way of each other.

    the brothers grimm

i've always been fasicnated by the original fairy tales and found they are way different than the disney ones. so when i heard about this upcoming movie i was excited and even the trailer made it loook even more interesting. but you should know that trailers have always been misleading and the movie was okay and found that it was something completely different story wise but okay none the less. did like ledger's performance and character where damon's seemed self centered but both are my fave actors. the movie tells the origins of the grimm brothers and their famous and infamous fairy tales that we come to know or sort of know. first noticed lena who looked like alanis morsette when she played god on dogma. goes to show trailers do give away and that kinda ruins the movie. oh well what can you do.

    Nope

I couldn't understand most of the dialouge and was bored really fast with this movie. It lasted all of 15 minutes in my DVD player before the player spit it out in disgust.
