Overview

Based on a novel by Edith Wharton, The Buccaneers follows four wealthy young women -- Nan Carla Gugino, Virginia St. George Alison Eliott, Conchita Closson Mira Sorvino, and Lizzy Elmsworth Rya Kihlstedt -- throughout their eventful journey from America to London. Though they set off intending to hunt down potential husbands for themselves, what they find has less to do with love and more to do with the repressive nature of turn-of-the-century English society. Shunned as "new money" by London's elite and courted by a slew of noblemen lacking any code of personal honor, the quartet is forced to examine society's focus on social status and personal wealth. Wish more people would see this!

As someone who teaches 19th century British literature, I have to be a connoisseur of British television dramas because I regularly show clips from adaptations to augment my teaching. This series adapting Edith Wharton's last (and unfinished) novel, is by far one of my favorites. I just wish I were an Americanist so I could teach Edith Wharton and use it in the classroom! The acting is superb, as the "Buccaneers" (newly-monied American heiresses) are played by gifted and appealing young American actresses, including Allison Elliot, Mira Sorvino, and Carla Gugino. They are backed up by a solid British cast, including Cherie Lunghi, Greg Wise, James Frain, and Michael Kitchen. The writing is equally fantastic--and it must have been a huge challenge to figure out how to dramatize and complete this unfinished novel by a master novelist. This piece fully stands up to Martin Scorcese's film version of Wharton's The Age of Innocence, and in fact in my opinion is superior. It has outstanding production values, music, and direction, is emotionally compelling, and provides great insights about the late-Victorian period, when the declining British aristocracy was shoring itself up with new American blood (and money). Needless to say, the American girls find out that life in the British aristocracy is not all it's cracked up to be, although each young woman eventually finds her own way to happiness--or at least contentment. For those who have read the novel, you will find that this version is much less cynical, but it still provides a trenchant critique of the British class system.

The cast is wonderful and you will find yourself starting the dvd over again because you don't want it to end. OHHH, I wish we could really find out what happens to Nan afterwards!! You will enjoy this book/dvd from begining to end and only want more!

    Brilliant Production!

This is a masterpiece! The acting could not be more convincing and it's only enhanced all the more by the exquisite location shots and costuming. It truly presents the turn-of-the-century class distinctions to full clarity on so many levels! It's lavish. It's romantic. It's a must see!
