Overview

This exhaustive (and exhausting) 3-hour TV movie dramatizes the last three months of Adolph Hitler's life, spent in his bunker in Berlin. Anthony Hopkins is repulsively riveting as Hitler, while Piper Laurie is even more frightening as fanatical Frau Goebbels. Joseph Goebbels (Cliff Gorman) feeds the Fuehrer's ego as the Nazi empire crumbles, while Albert Speer (Richard Jordan) defies him. The day before his suicide, Hitler legalizes his relationship with mistress Eva Braun (Susan Blakely). The film's plot extends beyond the suicide, with the triumphant allied forces arguing orver who has proprietary rights to Hitler's remains. First telecast January 27, 1981, The Bunker was based on Joseph O'Donnell's best seller, which in turn was based on first-hand accounts.

The movie is a 9 1/2 out of 10. Only because of the slow moving feeling of the film and its scenes. But... I believe that was the whole point to get across to the viewer... WAR is a game of Chess and Checkers...with luck and timing being everything. "WAR", can be; in my opinion... more of a mental fight (isolation / despair / paranoia / fear of your enemies...'the Allies'... As well as, if not more, your own army core / other military organizations (the Gestapo and the 'SS')/ your OWN... Country/ and of course, your side's leader(s) and their optimism's and brutality. This leads to a complete...Loss of HOPE, and/or any positive... EMOTION. WWII, had to be the cause of the most MENTAL ' Scars' than physical ones...at least from the standpoint of coping and living with the price of a memory, AND...the MEMORY of the SORROW it brings... I think that the 'War in ones head' during any conflict (foreign or domestic), is the TRUE 'machine / thing' that will break any man or woman's will to live. We humans are not capable of seeing or living with that type of DESPAIR and HORRORS , that conflicts between anyone /any groups / any sects/ and/or any nation(s). Living in a state of Fear and Paranoia, is more than a scary way of life. It is truly, a Horror !! A Horror that never kills you instantly; rather, it manifests / lingers / and spreads everywhere, from the smell and the haunting glow of 'IT...(FEAR)'. Sorry for the Melancholy, but that is what this movie's emotional theme is (to me at least), and it would be a awful movie if it was done with any 'Cheer'... So to speak. It is a must watch, but not a must BUY. It needs to be watched only once, or as many times as anyone watching the film feels the slow moving horror of isolationism, regret, and having to accept one's death (most of them before their time). I am in NO way a Hitler fan, but the film to me anyways, shows what the results of our actions can cause and do to people when it's based in HATE !!! Truthfully yours (...with all the PAIN & JOY in this man's young & broken heart :( Dominick Front White Dove Red (R&R Band) I am, the Frontman (Lead Vocals / Guitars / Piano & Keyboards) of White Dove Red & the Producer& Writer of my new album, "Virtuous Guilt". It's been over 5 or so years since my last full length LP. Look for it, under the 'Stabin Cabin Records' Label (which is out of NY/NJ/L.A./ & FL, in late 2009 or early 2010.
