There couldn't be a better Cadfael

I have been a Brother Cadfael and Ellis Peters/Edith Pargeter fan for about 30 years. When I first learned that the Cadfael stories were being filmed, I literally prayed for the great Derek Jacobi to be cast in the role. I knew he would be perfect. My prayer was answered, and he IS perfect. There are flaws in this series, of course - the change of actor for Hugh Beringar was not a good move, and the scripts do not always follow the books closely. But now that we have the "cons" out of the way, lets move on to the good stuff. These stories have been filmed with outstanding quality. The feel of the medieval era and the civil war have been captured with authenticity and detail, yet the history is not allowed to interfere with the story. As with Peters' books, 12th C. Shrewsbury is just the setting from which the story and characters emerge. Cadfael is as complex, wise, and compassionate as the original character, and it is a pleasure to watch him pursue truth and justice, if not necessarily the strict letter of the law, to protect the innocent. The mysteries themselves, and their unraveling, are intriguing, well paced and well cast. If you have never read Peters, or have no interest in the medieval era, don't let that stop you from trying this show. These are great stories, well written, well directed, and beautifully filmed and acted.

    I Also Recommend:

I've loved this series for years....

I have just ordered this set, but having watched the series first on PBS and then on video tape (which I'm replacing with this set), I know that this is a series that I will watch over and over. I read the books before they were filmed, and was very pleased that Derek Jacobi was chosen for Cadfael. There is a reason he was knighted - he's a superb actor in anything he's in (yes, I also have I, Claudius on DVD). The program cuts much from the books, but that is the way of film. The essentials remain, and are well done. The film quality is good, the settings are fantastic and the feel is perfect. I, too, was a bit surprised to see a change in the sheriff, but I have to say I liked Sean Pertwee (son of John, of Dr. Who fame)in the role. The rest of the recurring characters are well done, as are many of the characters specific to the story.

I gave this 4 stars for research, mainly because there is always some degree of artistic license taken with fiction. If you want a historical reference, you shouldn't be using a television program as your source. But if you want to get a feel for the time period and the way people lived, this series does a better than average job of providing that.

Not having received the disks yet, I can't speak for the physical qualities of the set, but as for content, it's well worth it.

Yes. Get it. You won't be sorry.

    Brother Cadfael, the Medievil Detective

If you love Columbo, Murder She Wrote and Monk, you will love this detective series set in Medievil England. What is wonderful about the series is the devotion to making the the set look as authentic as possible. The violence of war at the time, the tension between Brother Cadfael and his abbey leadership when he tries to help others, as well as the way in which Brother Cadfael solves crimes is fascinating. Sir Derek Jacobi embodies the former Holy Crusades warrior with the experience of war, the herbal wisdom of ages, and the cleverness of the best fictional detectives. These are 90 minute mysteries you can watch again and again and always find something new. All of the characters in each movie mystery are true to life and the music score fits the time and place. My only quibble is that Ellis Peters wrote twenty mysteries, and they only filmed the first thirteen. I only wish that some day they will find the funds to film the remaining seven. The good news is that all twenty of the Ellis Peter Brother Cadfael mysteries are still in print. Each one is a delightful read. Her writing is exquisite.
