Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Craig Butler
It's strange that anyone would want to film The Cat and the Canary, a venerable but thoroughly dated mystery that is one of the earliest examples of the "old dark house" genre. It's equally as strange that the person who ends up doing the filming is Radley Metzger, a director whose forte was soft core erotica (and the occasional harder core version). Canary is an odd film, definitely not without its pleasures but not as satisfying as one might want. The basic story is the same as in previous versions, although there have been some new twists and additions, such as making one (and possibly more) of the characters lesbian. But in presenting this familiar story, Metzger gives it a sheen of camp, as well as some very interesting visual flourishes. There's undeniable fun in Metzger's approach, and Canary is indeed quite stylish; yet it doesn't go far enough, either as a straight ahead mystery thriller or as a send-up of the same, falling between the two stools with an unfortunate little thud. Metzger clearly is willing to go so far and no further, but this approach ultimately limits the effectiveness of the piece. There are moments that are delicious, such as a maid being in a room in which a film is being shown; as she moves behind the screen, she reappears as part of the film being shown, a lovely, wacky little moment that the film could use more of. The cast is uneven, with Carol Lynley and Michael Callan just about adequate, and Olivia Hussey not up to that level. However, Wilfrid Hyde-White, Honor Blackman and especially Wendy Hiller are a great deal of fun.
