Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
C. S. Lewis's classic fantasy comes to life in this epic BBC production, which arrives in a three-disc DVD set including all three installments: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe 1988; Prince Caspian and the Voyage of the Dawn Treader 1989; and The Silver Chair 1990. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which earned BAFTA British Academy of Film and Television Arts honors for Best Children's Program, introduces four British children who are evacuated to "the biggest, weirdest house" in the countryside at the height of World War II. There's Peter the eldest, practical Susan, plucky Lucy, and "perfectly beastly" Edmund. Through an old wardrobe, they enter Narnia, a once-glorious land now in thrall to the White Witch. Under her cruel reign it is always winter -- but never Christmas. However, these "sons of Adam and daughters of Eve" signal the reemergence of Aslan, Narnia's former lion king, and as legend foretells, "Wrong will be right when Aslan comes in sight." In Prince Caspian, the brave quartet are called again to Narnia to help a young prince who has been marked for death by his uncle, the cruel king Miraz. The miniseries concludes with The Silver Chair, in which Eustace, the "horrible cousin" to Peter and company, returns to Narnia with a kindred misfit classmate, Jill, to help reunite the now-elderly King Caspian with his kidnapped son. Tom Baker, arguably the most popular incarnation of the legendary Doctor Who, is Caspian's helper Puddlegum, and Warwick Davis of Ewok and Willow fame appears as Glimfeather. This spectacular saga of good versus evil will stir fantasies and fire the imaginations of young Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings fans. However, viewers should not expect a special-effects extravaganza. Shot on video, The Chronicles of Narnia is charmingly low-tech, with costumed characters and special effects that do not dwarf the story. But there are enough swashbuckling swordfights, enchanted talking animals, and fierce beasts to captivate even the most jaded of viewers.

    An Enduring Classic

The new Disney movie of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is terrific, but this is the original. The acting, the sets and the music in this version are in some ways better. While you wait for Disney to come out with further stories from Narnia, I recommend this BBC version, especially The Silver Chair.

    Disappointing

This made-for-TV drama was aired as a four-part mini-series. Unfortunately, I bought this after seeing LOTR and expectations were high. Since it's a BBC production the acting and filming are very good. Where this comes up short in comparison is the special effects. OK so maybe it's not fair to compare this with LOTR. However, neither one of my two children (ages 9 and 14) sat through to the end of any of the three tales. Having read the book, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe was the only one I wanted to see to the end. Maybe it would appeal more to younger kids. Better yet - just read the books.

I love seeing one of my favorite book series come to life

Even though the effects may be older, the charming story stays the same. It is wonderful to see the well known characters perform familiar scenes and lines from the book. I can really feel like I am witnessing Narnia's heros and legends in their best adventures.

    A great story!

As another reviewer noted, the technology in these older versions isn't 'Lord of the Rings'-eque, but that tiny flaw only pales in comparison with the amazing story. There is a reason that this series of books is beloved by thousands of people, and I have a feeling that soon, with the remakes of these films, the story will also become a series of movies that filmgoers will enjoy for years to come. In the meantime, this set offers a great 'preview' of what the new movies will be like, and a great glimpse of Narnia to those who have never encountered it before

Takes your imagination for a run!!!

Due to the fact that these films were made starting in the 80's, the technology is not at a great level. However, the characters and stories have a way of pulling you in regardless weather or not it has amazing special effects. There is a new The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe movie in the works, and with that we can look forward to a modernized version... much like the effects in Harry Potter. But in the mean time, watch these. Though some things may not look in the slightest realistic, we have to remember that it's another world and anything is possible in Narnia.
