Overview

John Irving scripted this screen adaptation of his 1985 novel. Set during World War II, The Cider House Rules concerns Homer Wells Tobey Maguire, an orphan who spent most of his childhood at the St. Cloud Orphanage in rural Maine, where he grew up under the strong but affectionate care of Dr. Wilbur Larch Michael Caine. Larch has passed along his medical education to Homer, and the young man helps the doctor care for abandoned children and the newborn babies of unwed mothers; however, Homer refuses to assist Larch with the illegal abortions that he performs on the side; Homer has moral objections to abortion, while Larch believes in the rights of the individual and sees it as his duty to keep women in need away from dangerous incompetents. Wally Worthington Paul Rudd, an air-force pilot, brings his girlfriend Candy Charlize Theron to St. Cloud for an abortion, and Homer decides to go with them when they leave, hoping to see the world; however, the three end up going no further than the state line, where Wally's mother Kate Nelligan runs an apple orchard and cider mill, and Candy's family traps lobsters. When Wally ships off to battle, Homer grows closer to Candy, and the two fall in love. But their idyllic life at the cider mill is interrupted when Rose Rose Erykah Badu, a field worker at the orchard, becomes pregnant and her father, cider-house foreman Mr. Rose Delroy Lindo, turns out to be the father of her unborn child. This news coupled with the death of Dr. Larch, forces Homer to take a long look at both his moral principles and his future. Rapper Heavy D appears in the supporting cast as Peaches.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Adapted from John Irving's evocative novel with rare sensitivity, a tender and poignant drama stirs viewers' emotions as few films have in recent years. It begins during the early '40s in a ramshackle Maine orphanage, where Dr. Larch Michael Caine cares for unwanted children and performs illegal abortions. His oldest charge and reluctant protégé, Homer Wells Tobey Maguire, yearns to make his own way in the world and begins by hiring out as an apple-picker for nearby orchard owner Wally Paul Rudd. After Wally goes off to war, his beautiful girlfriend, Candy Charlize Theron, succumbs to loneliness and teaches Homer some life lessons Dr. Larch had overlooked. Caine is superb in his Oscar-winning role, but all the performances are wonderful -- Maguire brings sweetness and depth to his character, while is Theron is utterly believable as a free-spirited dream girl. Director Lasse Hallstrom My Life as a Dog recreates the period beautifully and exhibits a keen understanding of class distinctions between orphaned Homer, well-to-do Wally, and the itinerant workers led by Mr. Rose Delroy Lindo. Filled with warmth, humor, and pathos, The Cider House Rules is an enormously uplifting, life-affirming movie.

    A beautiful, sensitive story

This movie taking place in an orphanage in Maine grabs you from the very first moment. The children, the nurses, the doctor-played by Michael Caine- and especially Toby McGuire's character, are examples of outstanding acting. The orphans expecially, bring you to tears. Toby McGuire shows such a sweet spirit but also exhibits a strong stubborness about his future. His eyes are opened at the Cider House but he still maintains his sweet, loving demeanor. This is the type of film you want to share with your family and encourage them to drink in the essence of the luckiness of being part of a family.

    Great, but lacking

I loved this movie, but the uneccesary sex scenes ruined it for me. If I wanted to see that, I'd rent porn, and I don't want to! I'd reccomend it to my friends, but they wouldn't want to see that either. Clean it up, and it'd be a five star movie!!

This really was a great movie. I figured it was gonna be another boring one, but it really wasn't. I watched the whole thing. It was sad and funny and everything else. I can't wait to see it again.
