Michael Chapman's adaptation of Jean M. Auel's The Clan of the Cave Bear comes to DVD with a pair of transfers. The widescreen anamorphic transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and is preferable in every way to the standard full-frame transfer. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. English and French subtitles are accessible. The disc is worth seeing, even without any extra features, because of the very good widescreen transfer and the inexpensive list price.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Eleanor Mannikka
Pitched to the interests of teen girls, this simple-minded, semi-feminist tract is set in the dim reaches of a completely undefined prehistory. It tells the story of blond outcast Ayla (Daryl Hannah) who is adopted by the dark, hairy, and aptly-named members of the Cave Bear clan. When she grows up into adulthood her "blond ugliness" does not stop her from being raped by the Neanderthal clan leader. Left to her own devices, Ayla learns how to use weapons, and she is banished just for that fact. Big mistake. In the end, more is needed here than a pseudo, monosyllabic language to bring alive a prehistoric culture and to be convincing to viewers.

This series has both inspired me and guided me through parts of my life. Ayla is my role model and I only wish I could be more like her. She has touched me in ways that are hard to write down. I want more about her life. I would have loved to have met her. She has a little part of all of us in her. Thank you for writing these books. I am on my second reading of the whole series and on the very last book. Inspirition is drawn from your books. Only the mind who has created this is beautiful and wise. I love you Jean Auel. I wish you well.
