The Clash: Live - Revolution Rock

Overview

This documentary, which offers a quick overview of the Clash's career along with some potent footage of the punk firebrands on stage, comes to DVD in a fine package from Epic/Legacy. Overview

This documentary, which offers a quick overview of the Clash's career along with some potent footage of the punk firebrands on stage, comes to DVD in a fine package from Epic/Legacy. The Clash: Revolution Rock has been transferred to disc with the material letterboxed at the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Given that the footage comes from a variety of sources, some segments look better than others (a 1982 Tokyo performance comes from a videotape that's a bit worse for wear), but the vast majority looks and sounds very good. The audio has been mastered in two formats: a soundtrack that includes occasional narration (which often sounds a bit overexcited, as if this is an ad for a K-Tel distributed "Clash Greatest Hits" album) is in uncompressed PCM Stereo, while a "music-only" track is in Dolby Digital Stereo. The songs and narration are in English, with no subtitles or multiple language options included. As a bonus, this disc includes two television interviews with the band -- one with Tom Snyder on the Tomorrow Show in 1981, and another from Live at Live, a local New York news show, aired later the same year. As history, The Clash: Revolution Rock is flimsy at best (Topper Headon is the only drummer with the Clash mentioned by name, even in the credits, through film of the group performing with Terry Chimes and Pete Howard is included, and the Cut The Crap-era version of the Clash isn't even mentioned), but the eighty minutes of the band on stage in their prime is a joy to behold, and if you ever enjoyed the Clash and their music, this disc is worth playing as loud as your neighbors can stand.
