Overview

In this sci-fi film the brain of a brilliant scientist is transplanted into a 12-foot tall robot by his mad brother. At first the experiment goes well and the robot is well-mannered. But then something changes and the robot becomes a psychotic murderer. He eventually ends up terrorizing the United Nations. The only one that can stop him is the late scientists little boy, who calms down the emotionally distraught being and stops his deadly rampage.

The Colossus of New York is an enjoyably cheesy science fiction thriller. Make no mistake about it: Colussus is a far cry from a great movie. But as with so many of its sci fi brethren from the period, there's something about its earnestness and its intentions that makes it hard to resist, even as one is groaning at the cheap special effects or laughing at the absurdity of its plot. Certainly the plot could only happen in science fiction, but at least the set-up is here for a reason: to explore, however superficially, the idea of man's soul and its importance in defining his humanity. The discussion of this issue is handled in ludicrously simple terms, yet there's something appealing about the far-from-deft way in which it is handled. Eugene Lourie's direction is not especially inventive, but he does manage an interesting moment or two. Of the cast, Ross Martin and Mala Powers acquit themselves reasonably well; Otto Kruger is enjoyably if embarrassingly hammy, and Charles Herbert is annoying. The special effects, most notably the robot that gives the film its title, are laughable.
