Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
When mystery writer Dashiell Hammett dreamed up sophisticated sleuths Nick and Nora Charles, he made them idealized versions of himself and playwright Lillian Hellman, his lover. Cynical, urbane, and inordinately fond of alcohol, the Charleses romped through The Thin Man, a 1934 novel that hit bestseller lists within days of its hardcover publication. M-G-M immediately bought screen rights to the story and had screenwriters Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett dash off a screenplay. Contract players William Powell and Myrna Loy were drafted to play Nick and Nora, and staff director W. S. Van Dyke was given the job of shooting the movie within a few short weeks. Released before year’s end, the filmed version of Hammett’s novel wowed critics and audiences alike. The mystery of the missing inventor took a back seat to the antics of the perpetually pickled Charleses, whose playful banter delighted viewers. A 1936 sequel, After the Thin Man, picked up immediately after the events of the first film and cast young James Stewart as a murder suspect. Nearly as good as the series opener, After also enjoyed great success. Another Thin Man 1939 began a gradual trend toward domestication; this entry introduced the infant Nick Jr. and devoted more footage to the Charleses’ home life and scene-stealing pooch, Asta. Shadow of the Thin Man 1941 found the couple solving a murder at the racetrack, but it lacked the edge of the first two films. The Thin Man Goes Home 1944, which had Nick bringing Nora and Junior to visit his parents in their small town, was almost intolerably folksy, calling to mind one of M-G-M’s Andy Hardy movies. The series perked up with its final episode, Song of the Thin Man 1947, a borderline noir film that unfolded in smoky jazz clubs and underworld dives. Even at its weakest, the Thin Man series benefited from the Powell-Loy chemistry. They made one of the screen’s best teams; indeed, they appeared together in several other films based on the popularity they achieved in these breezy mysteries. Basically, this box set offers two classics, two better-than-average whodunits, one mediocre effort, and one outright turkey. But even the worst Thin Man movie is not without merit. Lifting the set over the top, though, is a bonus disc with splendid documentaries on the series stars: Hollywood Remembers: Myrna Loy - So Nice to Come Home To and William Powell: A True Gentleman.

    Love Nick and Nora

This set is a must for anyone who likes the Thin Man movies. I love the black and white detective and murder mystery movies, particularly The Thin Man series, Charlie Chan series, Sherlock Holmes with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, The Saint, Philo Vance, and other movies such as Rebecca, Laura, The Kennel Club Murder Case, etc. William Powell and Myrna Loy were a dynamic couple on the screen. They really seemed to enjoy working with each other and it shows on the screen in these movies.

    Screwball Comedy Meets Murder!

These movies are terrific! The dialogue is so witty and fun. Powell and Loy play off each other perfectly. These movies go beyond the normal screwball comedies. Each one has an interesting murder to solve with lots of twists and turns. The suspects are fleshed out enough to truly add to the whole feel of each of the movies. And of course the endings, where all the suspects are in one room.......is classic. You can't go wrong with these movies. Sit back and let the fun begin!

    The best mystery duo

I love these guys. I'm not big into comdey/mystery, but Nick and Nora are the best duo in the history of duos. They even beat Bogie and Bacall, my all time faves. Okay, it's a close tie.

    Before Charlie's Angel's Thin Man

Nick and Nora Charles are simply the most entertaining sleuthing couple in the history of film. I was hooked on the series back when they ran on AMC and was thrilled to see them available on DVD. Myrna Loy and William Powell rank as one the greatest onscreen duos since the likes of Nelson Eddy and Jeanette McDonald or Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. Their side-splitting banter throughout each film makes every scene enjoyable. I highly recommend this series!

Myrna Loy and William Powell are delightful

Unlike any detective series I have ever come across! Its absolutely fantastic. The two film stars are brilliant together in this humorous and witty series that shows them at their best. Well developed characters and complex yet light hearted writing makes watching a delicious treat for anyone who enjoys classic film or televison.

    Love this series

I don't remember how I got hooked on the Thin Man series but I bought this set years ago and I still watch them. Whenever I'm tired of seeing the same old crap on TV I pull these out and just have a good laugh. They are a the best acting duo ever and the supporting actors are just as witty and fun as any I've ever seen (including a young Jimmy Steward!)

Great movies. Good to watch wrapped in a blanket in front of the fire!

Powell & Loy are superb together! And the guest stars are great. The plots are old fashioned but still used in updated movies. You can't go wrong with The Thin Man movies!

    This is so great...

I am so excited to know these are coming out on DVD. I discovered these old movies years ago on cable and so enjoy whenever I now see them. It is so true that "they just don't make movies like they used to". Hollywood should look back because what is old is new again. When a new movie comes along that tries to capture that old magic, it is so refresing.

    AT LAST!!

I've been waiting for these to be released as a boxed set. I refused to buy any individually; they deserve to be together as a collection. I have them all on home-made videos, which I watch over and over, so really need to replace with the dvds. I'm counting the days.
