Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
This second major TV benefit concert for victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks brings together an astounding array of musicians, actors, comics, filmmakers, and -- perhaps most important -- people involved in the rescue and recovery operations at the former site of Manhattan's World Trade Center, now known as Ground Zero. Compared to the solemn, studio-bound America: A Tribute to Heroes telecast a few weeks earlier, The Concert for New York City is a more sonically varied event, staged on October 20, 2001, at Madison Square Garden. A celebration of the city's spiritual resilience, it begins on a somber note, as David Bowie plunks out a spare rendition of Paul Simon’s “America.” Quickly, though, Bowie sends the proceedings into anthem-overdrive with "Heroes," foreshadowing a night of fist-pumping intensity punctuated by poignant moments of proud reflection. The remarkable all-star parade continues with brilliant sets: The Who provide a full-throttle "Won't Get Fooled Again"; Rolling Stones Mick Jagger and Keith Richards offer a chilling "Salt of the Earth; Destiny's Child turn reflective with an a cappella gospel medley; and " James Taylor's "Fire and Rain" ("Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground…") resonates like never before with searing power. Paul McCartney, who also helped to organize the show, puts a defiant punctuation mark at the end with the song “Freedom,” written for the occasion. Though the show sported a slew of famous hosts -- including Salma Hayek, Harrison Ford, Mike Myers, Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Carrey, Billy Crystal, Richard Gere, Chris Rock, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Stiles, Meg Ryan, Susan Sarandon, John Cusack, Mark Wahlberg, and Halle Berry -- the ultimate stars were the uniformed heroes who were seated closest to the performers. The concert was also considerably brightened by short films directed by local giants: Woody Allen captures a series of kooky cell phone conversations; Edward Burns films the city like an ultra-romantic set of postcards; Martin Scorsese reminiscences about his Little Italy neighborhood; Jerry Seinfeld goes crosstown in a hilarious string of vignettes; Kevin Smith tells the history of New Jersey vs. New York in language too colorful to print; and Ric Burns serves up a magical clip from New York: A Documentary Film. Emotions on high

For the better balanced view, e.g. to avoid biases I would suggest viewing of another great classic - Noam Chomsky: Distorted Morality - America's War on Terror? 2002, also in this catalogue. Playing on people's emotions has usually been the strategy of the worst dictators in History - nationalists, and their believers. Read ''Mass Psychology of Fascism'' by Wilchelm Reich. The future gives shape to things. It is hard to judge if you cut off an event from its context, from past or future.

    America Comming Together

Right After 9/11, all of America came together. This move, shows how we care for the soldiers in Afganistan, and all the people that died in the World Trade Center, The Pentigon, and all the people in the plains. This movie shows that America Doesn't take anything, from anyone and that WE ALL STAND TOGETHER.

It does not get any better than this.

Simply the best concert I have ever seen. A unique, powerful and very emotional evening at New York's Madison Square Garden. The best of the best were there playing music with all their passion. A few lighter moments help offset the extreme emotions spontaneously erupting from the event. Steve G. Ottawa Canada 8/28/02
