Overview

Though there are a couple of moments that the print seems a bit worn, the picture quality on The Confession is very good. Flaws are irregular and are quickly forgotten. Though it would have been nice to see Sterling use an anamorphic transfer, at least the film is widescreen at 1.85:1. Fortunately picture quality is not compromised, as it looks very good, with true colors and few distracting elements. This disc has a four-channel surround soundtrack. The sound is not in Dolby Digital so it is necessary to turn off a digital tuner and use Dolby Pro-Logic to get anything beyond a two-channel track. There is next to no surround material, but it's still a good soundtrack with the dialogue centered up front. Considering the type of film it is (courtroom drama) there would be little use for a full surround track -- there just isn't that much going on. The extra materials are a good reason to watch the disc. In a rare move for any studio, there are three commentaries, one from the director David Hugh Jones and the writer, one from Alec Baldwin and Amy Irving, and one from Ben Kingsley and the producer. These are insightful commentaries about making films and acting in them. There is also a brief discussion from law expert Stan Goldman that dissects portions of the film in their legal terms, some trivia dealing with the legal profession, and other, more standard extras, including theatrical trailers.
