Yet another neglected gem given the star treatment from the folks at Blue Underground, their release of George A. Romero's The Crazies is the perfect example of Blue Underground's remarkable attention to detail on films that may otherwise unjustly disappear into obscurity. Overview

Yet another neglected gem given the star treatment from the folks at Blue Underground, their release of George A. Romero's The Crazies is the perfect example of Blue Underground's remarkable attention to detail on films that may otherwise unjustly disappear into obscurity. Presented in 1.66:1 anamorphic widescreen, the image is remarkably solid given the film's low-budget origins, showing slight grain in the night sequences and with generally strong colors. Likewise, The Dolby Digital Mono audio mix is sharp and clean throughout. As with many of Blue Underground's discs, fans certainly won't leave wanting for more given the supplemental materials provided. It's great to hear Romero discuss the film on the lively commentary track which also features William Lustig, and aside from humorous anecdotes, Romero also makes observations concerning both his maturing as a filmmaker and of course the joy of shooting a film in Pittsburgh. "The Cult Film Legacy of Lynn Lowry" featurette offers an engaging interview with the lovely actress as she reminisces about her sometimes troubled film career and he current career as a stage thrush. Theatrical trailers and television spots give viewers a glimpse back at the sensational original advertising campaign, and rounding things out are a poster and still gallery as well as a detailed biography of the director.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Robert Firsching
This combination sci-fi paranoia film and bloody shoot-'em-up actioner was not the success that George A. Romero and company expected after Night of the Living Dead. It is, however, a well-made, fast-paced thriller that delivers the goods. With its threatening safe-suited soldiers in their Halloween gas masks and an apocalyptic air of violence and madness, The Crazies serves as a virtual ode to paranoia, taking concepts later seen in Rabid and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial to frightening extremes. Needless scenes of the soldiers looting the corpses before burning them can be forgiven as Vietnam-era pandering, but otherwise, Romero remains remarkably even-handed. There are plenty of gunfights and gore, though, as a sweet old lady hacks a soldier to death with a knitting needle and Romero indulges in his penchant for blood-spurting head wounds twice in the same scene. In structure, this film most resembles Romero's later Day of the Dead also with Richard Liberty -- bickering soldiers, scientists racing for a cure, put-upon heroes fighting lunacy -- but this one is much more kinetic and exciting, disproving the frequent charges that Romero knows nothing about action scenes. The Crazies is a surprising, neglected treat.
